Works for Me: Getting a Good Night’s Rest

It’s actually supposed to be Christmas-themed this week, but I think this applies to the holidays pretty well!

The funny thing about today’s Works-for-Me Wednesday tip is that I haven’t been following my own advice lately. I guess that just means that I can prove my own point. As I have been getting out of my routine, I have been struggling to sleep at night and stay awake during the day.
One thing I have learned is that I sleep the best when I go to bed the same time every night. I set my bedtime at a reasonable hour (for me that’s 11:30 during the school year), and I stick to it. I give myself a reasonable amount of time before that to get ready for bed, get ready for the next day, and spend time reading and praying. Any extra time I have before “bedtime” I spend reading. This gives me ample time to prepare for bed and wind down.
When it is time the turn the lights out, I’m ready to fall asleep. This allows me to use the most of my time by not wasting it laying there thinking through all the things I didn’t do as well as giving me the best chance of being ready to go in the morning (which can be hard since I’m not a morning person).
I know that there are crazy times in my life that I won’t be able to do this, but for the most part it is something anyone can do. Even if you have a list of things still left undone, you will be better prepared to tackle them in the morning after a restful night.
Sticking to a nighttime routine…that works for me!

Isn’t it amazing how our body seems to know that it’s time to go to sleep and knows that it’s time to get up. Thanks for your tip.

This is excellent advice, and I know this, but I need someone to come over to my house and *tell* me to get ready to go to bed.
