Suicide Is Not a Joke

It bugs me when people joke about suicide. They might say something like, “Her voice was so annoying I wanted to kill myself.” Of course they aren’t serious and are taking it lightly, but killing is not something that should be taken lightly.

I’m not sure why this bothers me so much. No one close to me as attempted suicide, but I do know of others who have.

It might just be my stance on human life. I don’t think talking about killing someone made in the image of God, whether it be yourself or someone else, is a joking matter. Thoughts of suicide are already a temptation to some and joking about it doesn’t seem like it would encourage them to seek help.

This might not be a big deal, but I hear jokes of this sort all the time. It just makes me want to cringe.

Bummer. I have a friend who attempted suicide, and I definitely have had patients who have attempted suicide. It’s kinda scary. Then again, I’m guilty of making those jokes (generally not because people are annoying though).

You are right….it isn’t a joke. And it is a growing problem…especially among young teenagers.
