Pillow Issues – Help Please!

I need help. I have issues with pillows. I like pillows, they just don’t seem to like me. I don’t know what to do.

My problem is that my pillow is always getting really flat, but only one one end. It basically turns into a long wedge. Very quickly, after a couple of weeks. It doesn’t seem to matter that I rotate it every night; it happens anyway.
Now I know that I don’t buy the most expensive pillows, but I can’t afford to spend too much. Seminary students don’t live extravagantly. Do you have a pillow that you could recommend? I prefer it to be medium fluffy (not too hard, not too fluffy), not down or foam, and I sleep on my side often.
If you have pillows you wouldn’t recommend, I’ll take that advice too!

  1. Hi!

I have always had “pillow issues.” Same troubles as yours.

A couple of years ago I invested in a foam (I know you said no foam)pillow, and have never looked back! I absolutely love it. I take it on every overnight trip I go on (which is NOT often!)and on long car trips.

It’s squeezable, and can be manipulated into just about any shape you need it to be. Mine has lasted far longer than any other pillow I have ever had.

I think it cost between $60-$70. I know that’s not a cheap pillow, but I used to go through several a year, and this one has lasted 2-3 years already. Love it, love it, love it!

Good luck! I feel your pain!

  2. What a great question! I am very picky about my pillow. Isn’t that terrible. I sleep on my side as well and can’t stand a pillow that is too fluffy or too flat.

I’m looking forward to hear what pillow advice you get. :)

  3. Target. I love their pillows, and they’re affordable. Mine has lasted for about five years now and I just got two more, which are even better.

Also, you can try fluffing it up by hand every morning, and washing it every few months.

  4. Sorry, we’re having pillow issues in my home too. I got a pretty nice pillow at Target once because I think it was accidentally mismarked and WAY cheaper than it should have been (hee hee!). but I had to comment since I’m the wife of a perpetual seminiary student! ;)

  5. I suggest the zoned latex foam pillow from JCPenney’s. It is the BEST! It cost around $30, but will last longer than 3 $10 pillows and is never flat. You can get one try it, and if you don’t like it send it back, but I don’t think you will be disappointed!

  6. $5 pillows at Walmart and at Target have been the best. Both stores have these pillows labeled for “side sleepers”.

Also, at Linens and Things a few years ago I bought stuffer pillows for our King Size Shams … these were just suppose to be for decoration, but we use them every night and they have not lost their shape.

Question: if you don’t want foam or down, what else is there?

  7. OneMom: I’ve gotten the $5 pillows before, and they have the same problem I described.

I don’t know what regular pillows are made of, but it’s not down or foam. The main reason I’m picky about what it’s made out of is that I’m a big drooler. I’m sure you all wanted to know that!

  8. First of all, I never knew you were a drooler. Now that I have said that, I will tell you my pillow advice. TJ Maxx or Homegoods or Ross or somewhere like that. You can usually get REALLY nice pillows for about 12- 15 dollars. I bought a pillow there at TJ Maxx I think– right before you moved in and I absolutely love it. Happy Pillow hunting my drooling friend!!! :)

  9. I looooooooove my buckwheat hull pillow! I’m a side sleeper and I tend to sleep on my right shoulder which had surgery a few years ago. The buckwheat pillow conforms and supports and all that jazz. It took about 4-5 nights to get used to but now I can’t sleep well without it!
