Dear Elevator Dudes

Remember when I talked about one of your co-workers and how I didn’t know how to respond to his meaningless chit chat on the very short elevator ride? Well I don’t consider that as weird as what I heard coming out of your two mouths.
If I’m not mistaken, you are both well into your 40s if not 50s. You’re grown men who apparently succeed in pulling off the wearing-a-tie-working-9-to-5 gig. I’m glad that you do that. I assume you have families to support that depend on that income. But it’s what you do in your free time that I find a bit odd considering your age and place in life.
At first, Dude-Number-One, you were discussing how you just got a new guitar. I can respect a man who plays in a band on the side, but it turns out that’s not what you were talking about. You were saying that you got a new guitar for Rock Band, which now completes your set. Now you and your buddies can now sit around and pretend that you’re a band.
I know I’ve heard people my age discuss Rock Band and Guitar Hero, and I can get how it could be an amusing way to pass a half hour, but I don’t get why you would want to invest in it beyond that. It’s apparently more than a passing hobby for you, as you were discussing it with your suit-clad colleague as well.
So, Elevator Dudes, it’s not that I’m saying that you can’t play and enjoy Rock Band, it’s just that I don’t get it. Could you please explain to me why otherwise normal, middle-age men have such a random, purposeless, costly pastime?
Without a tune,
Ronnica

I don’t know anything about Rock Band, but as a reformed MMORPG gamer I have seen first-hand that people will spends thousands of dollars on such things. One guy we knew in the game (Lineage2) stole virtual items from another player and sold them on ebay for nearly 5 grand! And people have actually been murdered for doing such things. So yeah, people take it pretty seriously. Scary!

Those ones are just too funny.
I remember sometime back in the days when the old fashion kids play/pretend guitar was replaced with one in plastic that had buttons on it and well yeah it made a terrible sound but in principle this is now what is “modernized” and hooked up with the $300-$600 playstation and for some reason I think it may just be the same people using them as the ones getting a plastic guitar with buttons as a kid.

Would this be a bad time to tell you that I bought my hubby (not my children) an PS3, a WII, and a PSP. Somehow he needed all 3. I’m sure Guitar Hero and Rock Band are not far behind! They really are just big kids!

I know, that’s just embarrassing. I’m sure that takes up a lot of their Dungeons and Dragons game time away as well as those civil war reenactments on the weekends. Men…can’t live with ‘em; can’t make them grow up…

I used to work with some people that played those role-playing games with each other at night, then come into work the next day and talk about what they did the previous night. I never understood it. It was so real to them.
I mean, I like playing video games, but not to that extreme.

Hey, I’m one of those guys…
Okay, maybe not. My schedule doesn’t permit me to spend much time playing video games anymore, but Rock Band is fun because I get to spend time with my friends…which sadly isn’t that often either. So don’t be trashing my only other outlet to the real world besides the internet…or else I’ll sent the virtual assassins after your blog.
