Today one of my roommates, April, is graduating. While I’m happy for her (no more papers! no more tests! no more projects!), I’m sad to see her graduate because I’ve always had a class with her each semester we’ve been here. It’ll be weird not to have her in any of my classes. Also, we will no longer be living together, so that’s a big bummer too. As excited as I am for the new apartment (and I’m definitely excited!), I’m not excited to be moving without her! Oh, the memories!
Dori and I visited our new apartment last night. We’re really excited about it, but there’s is one big thing we’re not keen on: it smells like smoke. We don’t have any downstairs neighbors and we’re in the corner, so we’re figuring it was from the last tenant. Any ideas on how to get rid of that smell? It doesn’t bother me as much (though it’s not pleasant) but Dori understandably doesn’t like it. Any ideas/suggestions? There’s still a couple more days before we move in, so I have a little time before our belongings will be in there.
Our guest bathroom always smells like smoke because the people across the hall and above us smoke. I’m not a big fan of the smell so it bothers me, but if you can handle it then it’s not that big of a deal.
Get some boxes of baking soda and leave them open (one or two in a room). It really does help. Recently someone also told me to take coffee (grounds or beans) and leave them in a bowl/plate in various places (or closets). I haven’t tried it yet, but sounds like it is supposed to absorb the smell like the baking soda does. You could also wipe the walls down with some sort of baking soda/vinegar or lemon juice concoction. Maybe Google “getting rid of smoke smells” for other ideas :) Hope it works!
I’m betting you’ll need to get the carpets cleaned. When I cleaned houses for the summer, while in college, I had to scrub down the walls and ceiling of an apartment… Maybe you could paint. That would help with the smell too.
I didn’t read the other replies… hope I didn’t duplicate.
Cinnamon (like in carpet fresh or glade products) is suppose to do a pretty good job. I would leave the windows open and have the carpets and any draperies cleaned, because they will hold the odor.
Scrub the walls with a vinegar water solution (test the wall first to make sure that won’t ruin it).
Home Depot also carries a product that is suppose to remove the odor (Zep or something like that).
UGH! Cigarette smoke …. blech!
I was going to say clean the carpets and if you can’t do that try using baking soda or candles painting helps but that’s a pain and cost. There ar other products out there that say they kill the smell ,who knows if they work . When you have a min come over and answer my question . Good luck !
Ditto on the above comments. I’ve also heard that Charcoal absorbs well. I would think carpet cleaning would be the best bet for starters anyway.
