The Case of the Reunited Socks
Posted in Once I Was a Kansas Girl on May 27, 2008Well, the move is complete. There’s a slight possibility that we’ll have to move again if the smoke odor isn’t taken care of, but except for that we’re doing well.
Thanks for all of your suggestions. We put boxes of baking soda around the apartment and bowls of vinegar as well. We vacuumed with baking soda (though the carpets already had been cleaned) and wiped down the kitchen with vinegar (the walls had been painted, so we left them alone). We borrowed a high-quality air purifier. Still, the smell remained though very faint. Last night, one of our friends came by and suggested checking out the air filter. We open it up and sure enough it was FILTHY. It seems that the smoke and all that junk was being circulated that way making it quite difficult to get out of the air. We’re getting that taken care of, and hopefully that will be that. We don’t know why the apartment smelled like smoke to begin with (the last resident didn’t smoke) but it did. I’m please because under no circumstances did I want to move again! I just want to be done with all that mess and settled.
Now that I got the bad and ugly out of the way, I’m going to get to the good. Yesterday’s move went fantastic. Seriously, it was as smooth as my last move which was done by professional movers. The only difference was that I had to move a few loads (and I seriously mean a few, everyone else were great worker bees, seeing what needed to be done, doing it, and without complaining) and drive the truck (which was actually fun). Others took care of packing and organizing the truck, hauling things down (including the washer, dryer, and sleeper sofa) and into our new apartment, and even cleaning the apartment. I was so pleased that from start to finish the move took just over 2 hours, including the 20 minute drive between apartments. It was absolutely incredible, and I owe my deepest thanks to those wonderful friends who put in time and sweat on a holiday to help us out.
You’re probably wondering when I’d get to explaining the title of the post. Well, wait no more. You know how socks are notorious about losing their mates? Well, I threw all my clothes from my dresser into one huge suitcase. When I go to open them back up and put them away in the new apartment, sitting right on top was one of my unmatched socks…with it’s mate sitting right next to it. I have NO IDEA where it was in my drawers, but they must have enjoyed a sweet reuniting right there in my drawer. On a similar note, our lost-again-found-again remote was found again. It’s important because it is the only remote that will control the volume on the TV which does not have and indicator of how high/low the volume is so you have to hang out by the TV until you are sure you have it right. I don’t know how that thing hides, but it does. In the year that I’ve lived with the TV in 3 different apartments, the remote has been lost twice for a good 6 months total.
My new room is already coming together and I’m very pleased. Now I just have to work on getting boxes out of the middle of my floor (though I’m excited to have enough room to have them in the middle of my floor!). Hopefully by this weekend I’ll be able to show you the “after” pictures! I assure you, you won’t be seeing pink!

I am so glad the move went well. Sounds like you had some very efficient and good-hearted helpers … that makes ALL the difference.
Changing the filter should help immensely. If it continues to be awful though, I would bring it up with the landlord to see about replacing the carpeting and padding. Once smoke gets into the padding, you’re stuck with it.
Happy settling in!

The filter idea was a great idea…I think it will definitely help, esp. if you get a really good filter for the first time…I think some of them even say for smoke.
Look forward to seeing the new bedroom :)

Don’t worry….the smoke smell will eventually fade. The people who lived in this house before us smoked, and the place reeked! But it did go away.
