A Journey to the Other Side of the Country, Part Final

Finally, here is the last installment on my trip to California. I won’t talk anymore about Day 6, Thursday, because I already did here.

On Friday, we headed down to Monterey to do some whale watching. I seriously doubted that we would see any whales at all, but we saw several! Before going out in the boat, we went to a seafood restaurant in the bay for lunch. I was feeling a little bit gutsy, so I tried the tillapia. I’m not a fan of fish, but my roommate made tillapia for me one time and I really liked it. I’m glad that I tried it again as I probably enjoyed it more than the “safe” thing that I would have ordered. It was a little hard to stomach eating fish when I could see sea lions, sea otters, and other critters out the window, but I made myself do it anyway.

Once on the boat, it didn’t take us very long before the first whale spout was seen off in the distance. They were all humpback whales.

At one point, a whale was within 30 feet of me, a crazy thing when there isn’t really anything in between you and them. Yes, I’m scared of all animals that are bigger than me, even though I know they won’t eat me (or at least this whale wouldn’t….).

After following a mommy and a baby whale for awhile, we saw one whale breaching in the distance (where they jump out of the water). He did this over and over and over again, maybe 20 times while we were watching. It’s an incredible sight.

We really only focused on seeing humback whales, but at one point we also saw a jellyfish. We were told that you could see them, but we weren’t sure how obvious they were. I was discussing this with my parents, and then about a minute later, I thought Dad pointed down into the water. I looked, and saw this jellyfish. Turns out he wasn’t pointing at it (he saw it only after I pointed it out), but at least I looked and saw it. It was much more obvious than I thought it would be.

Saturday we got up close and personal with the Golden Gate bridge and went across it to Muir Woods which was a stand of coastal redwoods (the slightly smaller and younger cousins of the giant redwoods we saw earlier in the week). It was super busy there being a summer Saturday with perfect weather, something that doesn’t happen that often in San Francisco. When we came back across the bridge, you could look out into the bay and see dozens of sailboats dotting the bay.

Well, that’s it for my trip!

Oh I am jealous!! I’ve never seen a whale in the wild. I did see some dolphins at Virginia Beach, but no whales. Awesome!

Did you cross the GSB and drive through Sausalito? It is a gorgeous little town.
