A Journey to the Other Side of the Country, Part I
Posted in Once I Was a Kansas Girl on June 24, 2008First of all, I have a question for you. I recently was reading a discussion about blogging suggestions, and pictures in the blog came up. I was surprised by how adamant people were that bloggers should include pictures. I love pictures too, but that’s not why I read a blog. I read a blog for the content. However, I’m all about catering to the desires of my readers. Please let me know what you think about this topic in the poll on the top of my sidebar. You could put any comments about it on this post. My only problem is knowing what type of pictures to post since I don’t have any cute children (or ugly ones either) or animals or exquisite scenery. I’m certainly not going to push the issue and turn this blog into something that’s not me, but I’m willing to work on it. Any suggestions would be helpful.
Now, on to the update of my trip. Since I don’t have pictures yet (they are on my computer, but I haven’t gone through them yet…I took 633, thanks to my multi-shot camera and the jumping whales), I’ll talk about things that I don’t have pictures of, anyway, like the plane ride. I’ve never been one to take pictures out windows (though the lightning or the many California wildfires Sunday would have been the times to do it).
My trip to California was rather uneventful. Though people in California are colorful enough, I really don’t have any funny stories about characters that I met. The guy sitting next to me on the plane from Raleigh to Atlanta had a weird habit of breathing on me, but I’ll let that go. And he bumped me with his elbow when I was napping, but I guess that just comes with traveling economy class.
The entire time I traveled to California, it was morning. I had to leave for the airport at 4:30, which was 1:30 in the time zone that I was traveling to. I arrived in California at 11, just beginning my day. When I got to Atlanta, I ate a second breakfast of biscuits and gravy. While ordering, the cashier called me “sweets.” I may like biscuits and gravy, but I’m not from the south. It stills catches me off guard when people call me things like “sweets” or “hun.” I can handle it if its a girl, but if a guy says that, it gives me the willies. If you have to call me something generic, please leave it at “miss.”
We were late starting out from Raleigh because of a TSA computer failure. I’ve probably seen the Ocean’s and Bourne movies too many times, because the first thing that came to my mind while they were rebooting the system was that someone did that in order to get past the system. Of course, that wasn’t the case, and we were shortly on our merry way in a land that is really not overrun by high-tech thieves and assassins.
While I was flying across the country I got up to go to the bathroom and looked out the window. I always seem to be sitting over the wings of the plane, unable to see out the window. What I saw out the window this time was a patchwork quilt stretched flat from horizon to horizon, and I knew that it was home. Sure enough, I checked out the guess-what-state-we-are-flying-over screen, and it was the great ole state that I call home, Kansas. I would recognize that land anywhere (though it happens always to be located in the same place, which makes it very convenient).
When I got to San Jose, I was greeted with two wonderful things: Diet Dr. Pepper and Chinese food. I love how my favorite drink is becoming easier and easier to find coast to coast. Other than that, the San Jose airport was quite old. Like every other airport in the country, they are in the process of fixing it up. Unlike every other airport in the country, they only had one automatic thing in the bathroom. It wasn’t the toilets, sinks, or paper towels. It was the soap. Automatic soap dispensers are definitely my least favorite of all automatic bathroom machines, but it was the only one they had. Fortunately I was able to dance for it in such a way that it gave me the required amount of soap.
Once in San Jose, I had to wait for the parents for a few hours. It wasn’t too bad, especially since it took almost an hour to get my luggage. The rest of the time I just read and watched the people around me. One lady sitting near me had clearly been sleeping for hours. After I had been there for quite some time, she got up and walked away. I always wonder what other people’s stories are and why they are waiting around the airport.
To end my account of the first day of travel, we headed out to a cabin near Yosemite to stay for a couple of nights. It was very remote, but nice to get out of the city. Stay tune for more updates, and don’t forget to answer my poll question on the left!

You do what you want to do. I like looking at pictures, I like looking at the world through other people’s eyes. But if you don’t feel like posting pictures, then dont’! I will still read your blog.

I used to think I should include a picture most of the time, but now I don’t care. I’ve noticed most of my favorite bloggers do not include a picture in all their posts. I think a picture should enhance a story, especially if you’re describing a funny event.
I am totally with you on the waiters/waitresses addressing you as “hun” or “sweetie”. Bugs me.

I think pictures are nice, but if the content is only fluff I don’t tend to stick around. And too many pictures (frankly, even Pioneer Woman, that blogging legend, has too many pictures these days IMHO) just gets annoying.
Your trip sounds really nice! I always wonder about people in the airport too.

I like pictures to break up all of the text… but I like the pictures to relate to the text as well, and the text should be good not just picture captions. So really i like a mix of both.

You should just do what you want, I tend to stick a picture in quite a bit and yes I’m bad because lots of times they don’t go with what I was talking about but I liked it so I stuck it in. I still read lots of blogs though that never put pictures and I look at some that never really say anything and just add pictures.
