Pictures, Lightning, and Internet, Oh My!

Thanks to all those who voted in my to-picture-or-not-to-picture poll. The majority said, “Pics are enjoyable, but I feel most posts are adequate without them.” That’s about where I stand, but I will be trying to make a more conscious effort to take and post relevant pictures from time to time. And to the two who answered, “Your blog is great the way it is,” thanks. Brown-nosers. (I say that affectionately, really.)

This weekend was the first weekend that I’ve been home in a few. Actually, I ended up traveling to Virginia for part of Saturday with a friend, so I don’t know if that really constitutes a weekend home. I did stay home all afternoon and evening on Sunday which was quite enjoyable. I even ordered Chinese food last night, which was delivered in exactly 14 minutes. How great is that? Though I had planned on getting a jump start on my reading for class (the book review is due in two weeks on the first day of class), I settled for cleaning my room, bathroom, and doing three loads of laundry. Not bad, not bad.

Did I happen to mention why I had to stay home all afternoon Sunday? It’s because I had to wait for the Internet repair dude. We’ve only had Internet with this company for one month, and it already broke. Why? Because our phone line got struck by lightning! At least I assume that is what happened because nothing else electronic in our house suffered, and even the modem is hooked up to the surge protector. Next storm, I’m definitely going to unplug the phone line.

The storm was Friday night, and it is the worst storm I’ve actually encountered here in North Carolina. Several times the lightning seemed like it was right on top of us (which I guess it was when it hit the phone line). We even got rain both Friday and Sunday nights which is much needed in this drought-stricken land.

The Internet dude replaced the modem for me and gave us one with a built-in router. How convenient right? Not if it doesn’t work. I couldn’t get on the Internet unless I route the modem/router through the router we already had. Which is probably diluting our signal, as the Internet is much slower than it was before. Not to mention the fact that I have to now get Internet wirelessly (though the router sits on top of my computer) since the lightning appears to have zapped my desktop’s Ethernet card too. I generally can figure computer stuff out, but these are hardware problems, and I simply don’t do hardware. I feel especially bad since I was letting my roommate borrow my wireless majig and I had to take it back to get Internet on my computer.

This has turned into a stupid post about nothing, and for that I’m sorry. I just wanted to update about these things. I will be my brilliant new blogging idea later today or tomorrow so stay tuned. I think I have now made it sound so good that when you find out what it is you’ll give up reading my blog in frustration. Oh well, at least I’m excited about it.

Hey, it’s okay to talk about nothing. I just enjoy when you check in. I don’t do that enough on my blog.
