Sometimes You Feel Like a Nut…
Posted in Once I Was a Kansas Girl and tagged with Food on July 19, 2008I’m not a follower. For the most part, I hate trends. If I pick up a trend, it’s because I genuinely like it, not because I want to be one of the many. It took me several years of figuring out that capris were to stay before I bought a pair. I have only recently picked up texting. I resisted facebook at first because it seemed stupid (but I’ve now been at it for over 3 1/2 years…). I’m not totally out in left field, I just don’t see why the preferences of the masses should have such a great impact on my preferences.
This tendency to not want to follow the “it” crowd has kept me away from the organic frenzy. That, and the fact that I can’t exactly figure out what makes a cow organic. Just ask my roommate how many times I laughed at the sight of “organic” on the side of her pint of half-and-half. When I thought about it, I just imagined someone giving a cow manure, sans pesticides. And think about how cows make manure. Hehe. I don’t think she was amused.
The cost of organic products has further repelled me from the entire genre of products. Buying the cheapest products helps me stay within my budget. Besides, these are the foods I grew up on, the foods I enjoy.
I’m starting to change my mind. I’m warming up to organic, just like I warmed up to capris. After all, capris are great for warm weather when it is not appropriate to wear shorts. They are breezy yet not revealing. So, I suppose organic foods could be appealing too.
I’m not about to go all-crunchy. the price of a product is just too important to me. Besides, some of my favorite things don’t come chemical free (Diet Dr. Pepper is a biggie!). To be honest, I’m still not completely sold on organic foods, either. I can’t get over the thought in my head that these companies are simply exploiting the trend. But, I’m going to start trying to get a few organic and all-natural products here and there as long as the price is reasonable. It won’t be everything for sure, but it will be some things. A few things. Little by little. Just the other day I consciously picked up all-natural sour cream. Of course it was the exact same price as the regular, but I felt good. Besides, this way I can share it with my roommate who is much further down the organic path.
So, like the title says, sometimes I feel like a nut. I have always enjoyed Almond Joys (though I suppose that totally goes against the grain of this post!). But maybe having one less chemically-laden product in my body will do me some good? It couldn’t hurt, I suppose.

Let me know how it goes, Ronnica. I haven’t been sold on the whole organic craze either. I also haven’t been compelled to buy those bags to take to the market either. I figure, why should I buy $20 worth of bags when I can get the plastic ones for free. And I don’t go home and throw away my plastics, so I think I’m good. :) Oh well. Let me know how it goes for you.

Bananas have gone way up recently. Take Kroger, for example. Bananas are .69/lbs – which by fruit standards are cheap. But by banana standards they are a bit pricey. They get even pricier when right next to them, are the organic bananas – .99/lb.
The only way I’m going to venture into the crunchy realm is to buy local.
I reuse as much as I can. I try not to be an ‘energy hog’. But going crunchy the whole nine yards? Not me. Not yet. It’s got to fit into my budget. For example, I do my errands all at once because gas is so expensive. That is a crunchy activity. But I’m doing it because it benefits me. Yes, I am self-centered.

I, too, haven’t been able to get past the cost of eating organic. That being said, I would love to be able to do so…someday…

I don’t know about organic. I heard of a college student whose nutrition class professor freaked them out so much about what’s in our food that she ONLY wants to eat organic now. In that case, ignorance is bliss for me I guess.
What are you feelings on soy milk? I haven’t tried it yet.

Oh I’ve toyed with going organic, but well, think my husband would flip, the good ol’ country boy that he is, that might send him over the edge, lol
But hey, if its up to me to shop, then he might have to deal with what I get, right?

I’ve gone organic on some items, dairy being the most important for me. Others as they fit into my budget. Albertson’s does have a new line I’m checking out, not a whole lot more expensive than regular. I think it’s according to your own convictions.
Have a great week.

There are a few things I do buy organic, but it is extremely costly to attempt even just 25% of our foods to fall into that category.
And like you said, diet sodas don’t qualify. lol (My vice is diet coke.)
I’d love to own some capris. But I don’t think they are very flattering on me.

Aww, you're warming up to me! :) So… I looked up organic milk and this is what I found. The cows are fed with organic food(grown with no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, crop rotation and generally healthier soil). The cows are not given hormones or antibiotics and are generally treated more humanely. Love, your partially organic nut case roomie ;>
