The Rules of Sprinkles

Recently I’ve seen some pretty flagrant disregard for the unwritten (why would I need to write them?) rules of sprinkles. Since you seem to need reminding, here are the rules (I see I need to write them after all).

1. Sprinkles on donuts should always be fun-colored: red, blue, white, green, yellow, and orange. Fall-colored sprinkles aren’t appropriate for a morning treat. Fall-colors are not fun and festive, they are somber and introspective. This is not a good mood for the waking-up, driving-in-traffic hours. If you have so many fall-colored sprinkles around, make leaf-shaped cookies.
2. Unless on holiday cookies, sprinkles should always be thin and long. Ball sprinkles are only acceptable for cookies for holidays such as Christmas and Valentine’s Day. If then. Let’s face it: ball sprinkles are rather shady.
3. Cute shape sprinkles are fine, but only during those times directly around the holiday/event for which they were shaped.
4. Sprinkles on cupcakes are great, but only on top of an inch of frosting. Sprinkles should never be a substitute for frosting.
Am I missing any other rules of sprinkles? Have I made myself clear?

I’m thankful that I have enough food to be picky about what I eat. When I think about people who are starving it really puts my own pickiness in proper perspective.

Yes, totally clear. Good thoughts, good thoughts! ;D

  3. Jacki Says:

Who would substitute sprinkles for icing? Icing is the best part!

  4. Lynda Says:

I love this post and heartily concur – especially with the fall-colored sprinkles being reserved for leaf-shaped cookis. You are a hoot, girl!

  5. Irish Coffeehouse Says:

lol Fun post. I say let’s flood donut stores with this as a flyer. ;)

Sprinkles and no icing? Who would destroy a perfectly good cupcake that way? It’s just not right. At all.

    Excellent sprinkle rules.

Good rules–you’ll have to tell my husband who uses Christmas sprinkles all year round that he’s breaking the rules!

Who knew there were sprinkle snobs? I guess I am to be counted in that number. Great post! lol

    How about icing WITH sprinkles!

    Have a great day!

  10. Jewel/Pink Ink Says:

I usually skip the sprinkles part and just eat the cupcake :-)

Love the new look. Wolf stole my thunder a bit. Those who reside in the northeast tend to call them “jimmies”. As a child, we lived on Cape Cod for almost four years. When we moved to Wisconsin, people looked at me like I had four heads if I ordered “jimmies” on my ice cream cone!

  12. What A Card Says:

Hee! Of course there’s the even more unwritten unwritten rule: everything tastes better with sprinkles!

I left you something on my blog :)

and tossing a few sprinkles on a crappy cake does not a good cake make! Oh – and yes! You CAN have sprinkle-covered sprinkles if you are having one of those terrible no good very bad days! hahaha! brilliant!

  14. erinleigh Says:

ball sprinkles are definately shady… and those silver ball sprinkles for Christmas have been known to chip teeth (at least in my family) so you want to steer clear of the silver ones!

I never thought I could disagree with someone….about the use of sprinkles :)! I love that the donuts in the store match the season with their sprinkle colors. I also love ball sprinkles and shaped sprinkles! But I’m with you on the ‘sprinkles are not frosting’ point. Glad we can see eye to eye on something ;)

  16. Hot Tub Lizzy Says:

In my daughters eyes, sprinkles should be used liberaly in all foods… chicken nuggets, eggs, waffles… you name it, they want it sprinkled.

  17. Michelle Says:

LOL! We always go for rainbow colored sprinkles……it’s the only way to fly.

  18. Mrs de Miranda Says:

hahahaha I LOVE the sprinkles rules!! I have to agree!

The new template is gorgeous. It made me start singing “The weather outside is frightful, but inside it’s so delightful…”

And I think that a post on sprinkles has been due. Thank you for finally doing it.

And ball sprinkles? I am not a fan.

Never thought much about sprinkles before. But does remind me of the time I dropped the glass jar on the floor and they rolled (yes, I admit they were the round ones) all over the floor. A very pretty sight. Really!
    God bless,
    Brenda :)

I’ve been a slacker on visiting blogs the last week or so…out of town and busy with work…but WOW! I love the new blog template!

    I agree about the sprinkles.

  25. Aubrey Says:

I think these need to be posted somewhere! LOL

I agree about the fall colored sprinkles. Whenever I see a donut with brown & orange sprinkles, I (almost) always pass it up.

  26. Knit Purl Gurl Says:

I think sprinkles should come in metallic colors.. I mean, what could be more fun and cheery then sparkly sprinkles?!

Popping by with some SITSta love!

  27. Iva Says:

Um, aren’t the long sprinkles really ‘jimmies’? Gosh, I don’t know! I’m so defunked in the jimmy/sprinkle debate.

  28. TRS Says:

    Very funny!
I’m not preferential to sprinkles. GASP!
    Oh well… more for you.

I’m also a minimal icing sort of person.
I had a boyfriend in college who was very upset when I made a chocolate cake and didn’t frost it! I figured the chocolatey cake goodness was indulgent enough. We broke up – obvs.

Just yesterday – there was cake at work… and I waited for a center piece because I wanted less icing. The stares I got!!!

See…you really do learn something new every day. I had no idea sprinkles required such rules. These are good things for a mommy of a 2 year old to know!

I think we all have strong feelings about sprinkles… Okay – at least I do. And I cannot abide the crunchy ones. Sprinkles are supposed to be waxy and must stick to your teeth. “Crunchy” is for chips – not for sprinkles. My a favorite way to eat these un-crunchy sprinkles? On chocolate ice cream. Something from my childhood I guess – but I LOVE chocolate ice cream and rainbow sprinkles…

Thanks for clarifying spinkle use in baked goods. I think I’ve been following the rules…

  31. BPOTW Says:

How about sprinkles should actually have a flavor instead of being bland colored sticks! I’m ready for flavor in my sprinkles.

  32. Charity Childs-Gevero Says:

aaawww… rules of sprinkles…that is sooooo cute ‘n’ fuzzy ‘n’ yummy ‘n’ makes me wanna just smile! …smile…

  33. Mark & Rachel Says:

Finally catching up on some past posts…one rule of sprinkles here…they are called “hundreds and thousands.” Very odd and very hard to say. “Yes, I’d like that donut slathered with hundreds and thousands.” Way too complicated in the morning. My co-worker and I just had this discussion and she agreed sprinkles was a much more appropriate term. Enjoy yours.
