And We Did It Again

Congrats to the Florida Gators, really.  Though he wears orange, I’ve admired Tebow and what he’s done in the name of Christ.  I was disappointed there at the end though, with his taunting (not that others weren’t doing it, including Sooners.  It’s just that I expect better conduct out of one who openly proclaims his faith.).

It was a good game as expected, but we lost.  I wish I didn’t know this feeling oh-so well.  Let’s review:

In 2001, Oklahoma lost to Nebraska (yes, Aubrey, you all were my first loss as a Sooner fan) in a regular season game, but it was my first opportunity to feel this type of heartbreak.

In 2003, late in the season we were dubbed “the best team ever” as if we had earned it without playing a championship game.  Then we lost to K-State in the Big XII championship.  And again to LSU in the national championship.  That year, I was at a big Christian conference that was a great distraction.

In 2004, we played for the national championship against USC.  And of course lost.  I was spending time with friends at my parents’ house and had just bought a bunch of new clothes with birthday and Christmas money, so I focused on that rather than our loss.  Less than a week later, I met Jason White, our Heisman-winning and 2-time losing national championship quarterback.  I was proud that he was willing to face a crowd of angry fans in a busy Norman Walmart on a Saturday (I was his cashier).

In 2006, we were in the Fiesta Bowl, against a presumedly easy opponent, Boise State.  On a trick play in overtime, we lost.  We were tricked, all right.  This is considered one of the best games in recent times, which isn’t really something to be proud of.  To forget about the loss, I had our big office move to pay attention to this time around.

In 2007, we once again were in the Fiesta Bowl.  But this time, we were playing an even easier opponent in West Virginia.  Does the Big East even know how to win football?  Apparently, because they beat us.  I didn’t have time to focus on this, though, as I had a class to read for.  And politics to pay attention to.  Those were a great distraction.

And now this year, what do I have to distract me?  You guys.  Go ahead, tell me a joke, amuse me, give me a funny anecdote.  Tell me your most embarrassing moment, the strangest thing your child has ever done, the time that you shot Dr. Pepper out your nose.  Anything.

But hey, we’ve been 2nd best 3 of the 8 years I’ve been a fan.  I just had hoped that we would be THE best.  Someday…

  1. I think it is so aewsome when chicks watch football!!! My little sister ( I souldnt call her little she’s 23 almost 24) loves it!!! That girl can talk any guy under the table about all sports!

  2. I cheered for he Sooners.. just so you know.

    :)

Oh, and i took on a TON of orange apparel at the OSU game tonight… also thought about the fact that it may have made you nauseaous!

    :) ha

my most embarassing moment??? where do i start???

  3. I find it sad that the commentators were talking about how the refs “were forced to” flag Tebow for taunting…and then their comments about “that may have been the first thing he’s ever done wrong in his life…”

I’m glad that Tebow is not only outspoken about his faith but that he lives it up, but I’m somewhat annoyed by what the media is doing…because they’re pretty much setting him up to fall, and I don’t like it when people try to set up traps. I’m praying that Tim’s up to the challenge, and that God protects him.

Meanwhile, I have a Dr Pepper story for you – Crumpy and I buy our Dr Pepper in bulk…which usually means that whenever there’s a sale on 2-liters we will buy a TON of them. Last time 2-liters were on sale, we each bought 20 2-liters. That supply did not last us as long as it should’ve. We’re so going to have diabetes someday.

  4. ole Tebow got caught up in the moment. Hopefully everyone will give the guy a break. Those commentators were definitely “worshipping” him. It ridiculous.
My daughter (13) loves college football. She’s a GA bulldog fan though.
Anyway, we watched some little clip about Tebow doing his mission work in the Phillippines. He was at a medical clinic and helping to circumcise (sp) [sorry never had that done. haha] some little boys.
So later during the game when GA and FL were playing and Tebow was on a roll. My daughter yells at the TV “Oh, Tebow, go circumcise some children.”
My husband and I laughed so hard.

  5. Just remember the time I stuck a tampon up my toddler’s nose OR the time he stuck a pen in his butt crack! I hope that will make you laugh and forget for just a moment.
It really was a great game though AND I watched it with my son who was rooting for OU.

  6. Poor Oklahoma – always a bridesmaid.

Actually, the way Florida was playing for awhile there, I thought Oklahoma might win this one. At least it was a good game between two excellent teams and not lopsided. However, I really think the Utah Utes have earned some complaining rights this morning …. they should get a shot at florida and settle the national championship once and for all.

On a fun note, we’re working on reading tongue twisters this morning – with Hannah’s speech difficulties, these are proving to be challenging for her and excellent practice.

  7. Nope. Not the first joke from me. I am as sorry as I can be for the game loss. But my condolence for you is that God gave you the love of football to sweeten life a little bit. Just that extra punch of fun. Because in the scheme of things, unless you use it for His glory like Tebow does, it doesn’t carry much weight in our life. It is an easy disappointment to handle, unlike the HUGE ones that sometimes come our way.

And do you know how I came to this conclusion? Bet you do since you know what an AVID Crimson Tide fan I am! Chin up girl! There’s always next year.

Oh wait, that is basically what this whole post was about. Oh well, Boomer Sooners, Roll Tide, and Praise the Lord (not neccessarily in that order).

  8. Hi Ronnica,

Thanks for stopping by my blog today. I was actually at yours earlier this week visiting so I recognized your name on the comment.

I’ve got a child living down in your neck of the woods, or for a few more months anyway. She resides near Seymour Johnson AFB. I love visiting Raleigh.

Tbose of us in OH feel your pain concerning your beloved Sooners. Our Buckeyes lost also.

    In Christ!

  9. We lived in Oklahoma for a while when we first got married so I cheered for the Oklahoma team. And I’m not a sports fan. I didn’t cheer for Florida because the coach used to coach here in UT and ditched us for more money…Now why would you do that? Honestly. Did I read you were from KS? My son is moving to either KS or MO in 3 weeks. My uncle worked in KS City for several years.
