Don’t Boo Me Off the Stage, Please!
Posted in Current Events, Little Historians and tagged with Children, entertainment, movie on January 19, 2009Today’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day. I’d love to write a post about it, but my brain’s not just up for it. The kiddies have worn me out. (I’m writing this Sunday night, knowing full-well that I won’t have a spare second tomorrow to write a blog post.)
I generally consider myself up-to-date with pop culture. That said, I’ve hardly seen any recent movies because they simply haven’t appealled to me. Ever since the summer of Ocean’s, Pirates, and Bourne, there’s only been 2 movies that have really captured my attention (Enchanted and 27 Dresses). So, tonight, when my 10- to 12-year-old girls started talking about movies, I just didn’t know what to say.
They talked about Twilight and The Dark Knight, y’all.
One of the main reasons why I enjoy working with this age of girl is because we have a lot in common. In many ways, I still feel like a 12-year-old girl. Those were awkward, formative years in between childhood and adulthood, and since I still don’t feel quite grown-up, I totally relate. I also like pink, pens, and talking, things that are big hits with the preteen crowd. In general, I probably even like many of the same movies as they do.
But there is not one thing about Twilight or The Dark Knight that appeals to me in the slightest, but here are some of my favorite girls going on and on about what they loved about the movies. Now I don’t want to alienate you Twilighters as I know there are a ton of you, but I JUST. DON’T. GET. IT. And comic book movies? The only ones I’ve seen are the Spiderman ones, and even those I have to take with a grain of salt. (And, really, Toby Maguire may have had a lot to do with the reason for seeing those movies)
So, I guess if these girls are getting into them, it couldn’t hurt for me to give them a try. I guess. At least I should look into it…

Ronnica, don’t be too hard on yourself. I don’t get the whole Twilight craze. And what is The Black Night? Haven’t ever heard of that one at all. I’m convinced that the only reason your girls are into the movies is because pop culture tells them to be into them. I remember those days. Don’t you?

Oh yeah, we’ve seen Twilight – and read the books. I can tell you what the girls like – it’s like Harry Potter, but sexier… girls love cute boys and love stories. The rest is bonus.

Of course girls in that age group love Twilight. It’s the graduation from loving the princess fairy tales. The beautiful but overlooked girl is loved by the charming and attractive yet still mysterious and brooding boy at her highschool? Most who’ve realized they aren’t a princess or even secretly a princess by that age still inside want to be special. Twilight is cheesy, but it fits the bill.
I think both of the new Batman movies have been good in terms of the genre. However, if you are going to see them be prepared for some very dark movies, particularly the Dark Knight. It’s no wonder Heath Ledger was depressed after getting so into his character.

Twilight…ugh. And I seem to recall your disinterest in comic book movies. I enjoyed TDK, but I think it’s for different reasons than you might think. And no, it isn’t because I think like a 12-year-old boy.

I refuse to watch any of the more recent Batman movies (Batman Begins and The Dark Knight) because they are just too dark. Way. Too. Dark. I would suggest you avoid them too, but we can discuss that via email if you’d like.
As for Twilight; if you haven’t read the books you probably would like the movie. It’s so different from the book that I just sat there counting the mistakes instead of enjoying it. All in all, it’s a star-crossed love story with action thrown in for good measure.

I’ve heard from both spectrums about the Twilight movie. My daughter saw it and thought it was awesome. I, on the other hand, have no desire to see it only because I’m not ‘into’ that kind of movie. Give me a good, clean romantic flick.
I also wasn’t ‘into’ Chronicles of Narnia, but since we bought that dvd for Christmas, I actually liked it.

Ok so I don’t know anything about Twilight and I haven’t seen the Dark Knight, but heard it was good. I’m wanting to see movies like The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Changling, and…oh, my..the new Tom Cruise movie that I forgot the name of but looked interesting. WWII setting. Anyway, I love pink and purple, cool pens, highlighters and Sharpie markers, and do often act like a teenager, so don’t feel bad. I even have a pink laptop and purple phone (both of which I LOVE!).

You know, you should just like what you like and let it be! Not everyone’s going to like the same movies! I loved the Dark Knight and Twilight was ok. I loved the books much more than the movie!

Okay… If you get boo’ed of the stage I would get egged or rotten fruited!! I don’t even know what those movies are about! Never have been a big movie-goer, but if it has any “darkness” in it… that is just my cup of tea!
But I am interested to hear what you think about them if you do see them!!
:0)

I’m not going to say that you have to get into Twilight, but I would say that Dark Knight is definitely worth seeing. It’s so much more than just a comic book movie. Not only is Heath Ledger’s acting amazing, the directing is incredible, and there’s such a deeper meaning (good versus evil) that the story is written about. That is definitely one worth seeing no matter how silly you think comic book movies are.

We are huge movie goers here – that said, neither the Man Beast or I have seen Twilight. Neither one of us have the desire (I’d say that I think we’re too old except there is a lady at work who LOVES the books – and she’s old enough to be my mother). The Dark Knight was good. The Man Beast got me interested in comic book movies – I really do like them all. Darn that Man Beast…

Ronnica, I’m working on my comprehensive argument against The Twilight Saga right now. I wrote a little on it a while back, but didn’t get very deep into it then. For now I will just say that I believe it is disgusting and extremely harmful for pre-teen girls. But it’s something you can get sucked into. Look at me. I finished the series in no time.
The Dark Knight…eh. I watched it to see Heath Ledger’s performance and it’s a little entertaining. Not a favorite though.

Loved Twilight but it was because I LOVE romance but only clean romance. Twilight was juvenile-ish and it fell into my criteria for movies.
Hancock was the shocker movie of the year for me. We rented it a couple of weeks ago and I was SHOCKED at the content because of the PG-13 rating. It was too filled with language, alcohol use, and violence to be a mere PG 13. As a rule, unless it is a clean teeny bopper romantic movie, or a musical, I am probably not going to like current movies.

I have not read any of the Twilight series and I probably won’t. I don’t really get it either. I never go to movies any more, although I do kind of like superhero movies. I wasn’t a big fan of The Dark Knight. I didn’t think it was as good as everyone else seemed to.

I have 2 teenagers myself and I don’t get the movie thing either. I am absolutely with you. But I miss it, I miss good movies like Bourne! Thank you for stopping by my blog, I am overwhelmed by the SITS love!

It was refreshing to read your comments. I was sure you were going to have people gushing about Twilight, and possibly about The Dark Knight. But it seems like your commenters are like me, not that interested and not really caring. If you do see the movies hope you enjoy them though. Nothing like wasting your money on a bad movie :)

I’ve left an award for you over at my blog. Hope you stop by and pick it up. (I enjoy reading your blog and I wasn’t the least bit interested in Twilight. But that’s just me.)

Not crazy about the books (too wordy) but I did like the movie!
January 20th, 2009 at 9:38 am
I have read two of the Twilight books, and I am bored with them. The story would be better if the woman could actually write well. I agree with the previous commenter…the books are too wordy sometimes. And the main character, Bella, gets on my nerves! She’s annoying. So I can’t read a book about a character I find completely annoying. But I do think the guy they have playing Edward in the movie is hot. I might watch it for him.
January 20th, 2009 at 4:20 pm
I read the first two and enjoyed them. But when I reread the first one it bored me and I saw a lot of flaws I hadn’t seen before. And Bella is really annoying.

If you’re gonna minister to people, you gotta know your audience. And for girls that age…Edward Cullen sets a high bar for future boyfriends. I read the first book and hated it. Its 800 pages of a teenage girl whining about her life. I have that going on in my own home, why would I read about it? But my daughter devoured the books. And because I had some frame of reference, she, her friends and I have been able to have lots of interesting conversations that have given me insight (mostly good) about her that I might not have known otherwise.
So while I don’t embrace it as “literay genius”, I do appreciate the insight its given me into what’s going on in young girls’ lives…specifically my own daughter and her circle of friends.
Sorry, I didn’t mean to be so lengthy. Maybe I should have just written a post on my own blog instead. =\
