I Gave Cherries the Knockout Punch
Posted in Back in History and tagged with Cherry, Childhood, Food on January 12, 2009I got so many comments about cherries, both for and against, that I realized I had to share my story about why I kissed cherries good-bye. Except I wouldn’t kiss them, because that would require me to put them to my lips.
When I was young, probably 4 or 5, I was eating cherry cheesecake at a large gathering at the house of one of my dad’s work buddies. We were all having a good time, until I bit down on a cherry with a pit still inside.
It hurt. And I made a face. And I probably cried for my mommy. And all the adults in the room laughed at me.
Not yet being a woman of the world, I didn’t know that cherries naturally had pits. All the cherries I had ever had always came in cans, probably in the aforementioned fruit cocktail. Even now, I’ve never seen a pitted cherry unless it was fresh.
So then and there I gave up the cherries. It’s not been hard and fast, as I enjoy the flavor of the cherry goo stuff that comes with the canned cherry cheesecake topping. It’s just that cherries have a weird texture and well, they caused me to be laughed at.
So, a cherry made me a laughingstock, so I’ve left ‘em out in the cold. I wonder when they are going to beg me to take them back?

LOL… just kidding. No more laughter at your expense due to the weirdly textured cherry.

Haven’t you ever heard the phrase, “Jump back in the saddle?” Well, just in case, when you fall off the horse, you have to jump back in the saddle and ride again to get over your fear. Umm….I think you’ve had enough recovery time..lol.

Man, that’s brutal. I hated it when adults laughed at my expense when I was a kid. I swore a solemn vow to make them all pay for their laughter. And then I became an adult and started laughing at children too.

ugh! How terrible!!
I myself love natural cherries, even with the pits in them. They are SO good (to me) we get them from costco when they go into season.

I’m not big on fresh cherries. But love cherry Cheesecake!
Food associations are so strange, how it’s not always just the taste we don’t like but, like you, a memory associated with it. I won’t eat black-eyed peas because of their name. I feel like they’re staring up at me on the plate. Crazy, I know.
Have a great week.

I gave up tacos in 1982 because I puked after I ate one. I had a stomach bug, but I was convinced it was the taco.

I love cherries but I can see your point!

that is horrible that you were laughed at. I love fresh cherries… when I was pregnant with my first I asked my husband to go to the corner market and get them for me in the kilo’s and eat a kilo or more a day. YUM…
Glad you are feeling better!

Sorry about the cherries. They really are very good.
I think I am beginning to feel better. Everyone in the family has had this crud in the past two weeks.
If your roommate has 18 nieces and nephews, she must come from a family as large as ours.
The kids have even taking to putting their number on things they want when Grandpa and I are no longer here. Shay has hers on the huge mirror in my living room. She put it on before the mirror was even hung.

I have the same thing about olives. I’ve bitten into pits in calamata olives and it ruined them for me. Too bad, they taste yummy. Stupid pits.

You know my one year Blogiversary won’t be the same without a visit from you. How about that for asking someone to visit? Shameless, I know. But I DO want to hear from you today if you are able :) And you are the only one that I am shamelessly begging to visit.

Sounds like cherries gave you the knockout punch… What a shame that you have such bad memories of a lovely fruit. Terrible how such a memory from so long ago can still haunt us!
