Things I’ve Seen Today

1.  Something comical: Someone wearing stripper shoes at a career fair.  I’m pretty sure there wasn’t anyone there hiring for that career…

2.  Something strange: Lots of tattoos and some awkward-looking piercings, once again, at the career fair.  I’m not necessarily against these things, but it’s generally the rule that you got to cover ‘em up when applying for jobs.  This has got to be doubly important in this highly-competitive job market.

3.  Something so-not-me: An unopened Amazon box…how dare he not want to open it and see the book inside and smell that new-book smell?  Does it really matter that it’s for school?

and

4.  Something sobering: a sheet-covered pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run accident during rush hour traffic.

  1. My goodness, what a day. At my last job, we spent months interviewing recent college graduates for a marketing coordinator position with my firm. In about half of the cases, the candidates came in outfits that I wouldn’t even run out to the store wearing. Needless to say, none of them got the job. Did they think it didn’t matter or did they not really want the job and so they subconsciously, or maybe consciously, ruined it. I still don’t understand it.

  2. I think it’s so gross when someone walks around in stripper shoes. I mean, seriously there’s a time and a place…(usually mid day rush at the strip club and ya hang around by the pole) but a job fair? I saw someone wear them to church once and I just felt embarrassed for the girl. But even though she was in icky shoes at least she was where she should be. lol

  3. I was all set to comment on what I think about tattos and job interviews and then I read number 4. Sobering isn’t it?

Live each moment to it’s fullest.

    Have a great day!

  4. What a day. Today are kids/youth taught that they can’t be “just me” and get hired? I’m like you, it’s very hard for me to go two minutes without ripping into a box, even without scissors.

  5. I’m not sure how I would process a day like that. It seems like one of those movies where all these random events end up coming together and being connected to each other…

  6. Agreed about “expressing yourself” at career fairs. Those are details that can kill your first impression. It’s not so much that you have to be conservative to get a job. You just don’t want to let your style distract from your talent and qualifications. Although the idea of “stripper shoes” at a career fair really does make me laugh!

  7. Y’know, there’s a more colorful name for those shoes. But you probably wouldn’t want to use the phrase on your blog.

I’ve seen bodies. At least 3 of them on 3 different occasions. Two were covered by sheets, one was before EMTs arrived. They were all drive bys. It hasn’t happened for a while. I didn’t cry.
