Paranoia and Faux Pas

You know those AT&T commericals with the 5 bars in the background of pretty much every shot?  Then there were those Budweiser commercials for a while where you would see the crown on different things?  Coca-cola has a similar commercial where the main character (can you have a main character in a commercial?) sees Coke bottles everywhere until he gets that refreshing taste.  Every time I see that commercial (I’ve been watching a lot of basketball), I crave a Diet Dr. Pepper.  Probably not their intent.  ANYWAY, this is very un-subliminal subliminal messaging.  I don’t trust advertising anyway, but these types of commercials just brings out the paranoia in me…what’s in commercials that is intended to manipulate us that we DON’T notice?

Are you a Facebooker?  You know the new format that everyone seems to despise?  Well, it’s really a friend of newbies, because now you can’t do the faux pas of writing on your own wall.  Or really, you do that every time you update your status.  I do miss the days when the wall was seperate…and there were no applications.

Okay, obviously those two things have nothing to do with each other…it’s just a glimse at what I think about.

Maybe facebook will go back to its original self like Coke did when it ditched the New Coke idea. I would be fascinated to see a show or book on the way the advertising world uses images, sounds and smells to get us to buy things. I recently heard that most fast food joints aredwcorated in primary colors because they make you hungrier or something like that. I wonder if the freezing air in retail establishments is supposed to make you want to buy things. And oh! Have you noticed how the new Pepsi design looks very similar to Obama’s ‘logo’? Definitely not by accident.

I am a cyber rebel – I have not jumped on the FaceBook/MySpace OR the Twitter bandwagon.

Great networking tools, I’m sure. But also a bit too time consuming for this chick.

LOL! Here I was thinking you were going to tie together the Facebook-advertising thing by writing about those ads that pop up on the right side of the screen now in FB. They seem (at least for me) to be pulling stuff based on things I’ve written or said are favorites of mine…. like lately a lot of real estate related stuff, and also things for “work from home, Mom!” and the like.

Then again, it’s *always* giving me ads for the latest diet fad as seen on Oprah, and I don’t watch Oprah, so maybe it is trying to tell me something? I might just get offended if I think about that too much longer! ;)

I’m still trying to figure out the new facebook. I guess I’ll get use to it one of these days. Probably just in time for them to change it again.

I just joined facebook so I don’t know any different.

as far as advertising goes, seems every show is spotlighting one product or another. It actually doesn’t work for me, it tick me off that advertising isn’t left to commercials anymore (cuz i skip those with my DVR!)

I don’t mind the new Facebook layout, but it seems to really tick some people off. I hate the apps, which everyone else seems to love. I just don’t get them? What’s the freaking point?

Ads are for suckers – tivo is the way to go, just ff right through them. ;)

I’m with Ryan, I almost never see commercials anymore because I watch only recorded shows. It’s lovely. As to Facebook, the new “Home” view drives me crazy. I really don’t care to see all of the stupid quizzes and applications everyone does. I use Facebook because I like to keep up on my friends, not because I am interested to find out that if they were an element, they would be WOOD.
