“It’s a cruel concept, Valentine’s Day.  It’s as if they had a holiday to celebrate rich people or attractive people.  Miserable and alone?  Sorry, this isn’t your day.” – The Know-It-All by A. J. Jacobs, p. 104-105

“He prizes me as a soldier would a good weapon; and that is all.” – Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte, p. 434

“The housekeeper and her husband were both of that decent phlegmatic order of people, to whom one may at any time safely communicate a remarkable piece of news without incurring the danger of having one’s ears pierced by some shrill ejaculation and subsequently stunned by a torrent of wordy wonderment.” – Jane Eyre  by Charlotte Bronte, p. 482

“He searched for the right word to describe his own feeling.” The Giverby Lois Lowry, p. 3

“Isn’t that what it means to be civilized?  That you can wait to get what you want?” – Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card, p. 49

“We don’t dare to let people make choices of their own.”
“Not safe?” the Giver suggested.
“Definitely not safe,” Jonas said with certainty.
- The Giverby Lois Lowry, p. 98

“Intelligence and education, which all these children have, apparently didn’t make any important difference in human nature.” – Ender’s Shadow by Orson Scott Card, p. 109

“Why do you spend money for what is not bread, and your wages for what does not satisfy?  Listen carefully to Me and eat what is good, and delight yourself in abundance.” – Isaiah 55:2, NASB

“Do not be deceived, Wormwood.  Our cause is never more in danger than when a human, no longer desiring, but still intending, to do our Enemy’s will, looks round upon a universe from which every trace of Him seems to have vanished, and asks why he has been forsaken, and still obeys.” – Screwtape Letters by C. S. Lewis, p. 40

  1. Oh, I love these quotes! And, of course, anything by a Bronte is a keeper, in my book…BTW, don’t forget: Please come on over and check out my Silly Sunday Sweepstakes!

  2. Ronnica, these quotes are awesome!! Love the C.S. Lewis one, obviously the Isaiah one, and the ones from The Giver. I’ve read that book several times throughout my life and love it each time. I think the first time I read it I was only like 10 or so!

  3. @Katy: They are some good books!

@Cara: I’m about 50 pages from the end of the last book. Makes me kinda sad. Ender’s Game is still my favorite.
