Perhaps you’ve noticed it already (if you’re not reading this in a feed reader), but I totally jumped on the bandwagon and added Twitter. I’m not much of a follower…if I’m a part of a trend, it’s often because I was doing it already or because the trend just happened to coincide with what I wanted to do.
It’s not like I really need another electronic distraction. I spend my day in front of computers, I certainly don’t want to spend my nights in front of them, too. But Twitter’s something that intrigued me. I couldn’t figure out what the benefit was…I had blogging and Facebook, isn’t that enough?
Still, there’s been some days that I’ve wanted to blog something small that happened to me throughout the day. These little things aren’t important after the fact (which probably means they’re not important at all), and because I usually post my blogs first thing in the day, they don’t get blogged.
So, I’m doing the tweet thing simply to allow you all the chance to see the little day-to-day things. If you could not care less, I don’t blame ya.
If you’re a tweeter, I’d love your advice…what’s something that I as a novice should know? Any rookie mistakes to be avoided? And if you wish, my Twitter feed ID is ronnicaih.
I have had a Twitter account for over a year. I don’t do much on it AT ALL but it has gotten very popular all of a sudden!
I told my daughter the other day that I had a Twiiter Acct. – her jaw dropped. I don’t know why she was so shocked (and to be honest, a little hurt that I hadn’t told her).
I find tweeting difficult – I am too wordy to get anything but frustration out of it.
I have resisted Twitter, and the snippets I see posted haven’t made me want to Tweet. But I’m interested in hearing how you like it. Please post updates.
I’ve joined Twitter but am not sure how much I’ll be using it… I only joined last week so don’t have much advice. I have also joined Friend Feed, which seems more interesting as you can have dialogues with people and all the comments appear as threads under the question that you are discussing…
I whole-heartedly embrace Twitter. It is an utter waste of time, but what type of social media isn’t? (Isn’t that the purpose, after all?)
I, for one, was super excited to see you on Twitter. Added myself as your follower right away. I even noticed that I now have a profile picture of you on our site, Ronnica. Such fun! You are lovely, my friend.
-Francesca
I am not a hater, honest – I just have resisted Twitter (and facebook and myspace). I’ve got my blog. That’s enough for now. Will I Twitter eventually? Maybe if I really get into social networking. But right now – I don’t want to make the time. (notice I didn’t say ‘have the time’. We all have the time do those things which we want to do).
But I am excited *for you*. I look forward to hearing updates :)
Hey, welcome to Twitter! Yay! I’ll be totally following you. I love Twitter a lot, even though I have Facebook and a blog. There’s something about Twitter that does get addicting. My only advice is that Twitter is what you make it! Enjoy it and have fun.
I struggle with the whole issue of “electronic distraction” (great phrase, btw) as well. I also have a facebook and a twitter. I don’t spend much time at all on them since I started blogging. Blogging takes up a ton of a time. That is something I’m trying to figure out right now. Sometimes I feel as though my real life suffers at the hands of my virtual life. But, I can’t seem to streamline or limit my time here. Anyway, very timely post.
@Jennifer: Yes, those 140 characters go fast! I think it’s a good exercise though, of getting to the heart of what you have to say.
@Lillie: Yeah, what I had heard about hadn’t really wanted to make me Tweet. I’m serious when I say the reason why I’m doing it is to have a way to add little snippets of the daily kind of things on my blog! For that, I like it.
@Francesca: Yeah, it seems to be a waste of time, but I don’t think it’ll take up as much as Facebook or blogging.
@Iva: My blog is top priority, because it’s my favorite.
@Katy: So if Twitter turns out to be a monster, it’s because I made it one? Yikes! (but probably quite true!)
@Pam: Thanks. That’s what it seems to me. I have to set up boundaries in my life on when I can or can’t use the computer, or I could let it take over.
Oh you are going to love it!! I love it and have TWO accounts! haha
Well, I’m on Twitter (as you know) but don’t really get the point of it just yet. So I just twitter about my blog posts and it does seem to generate a little (very minor) traffic. Twittering when I brush my teeth, when I floss, when I spit, seems a little counter-productive. Not to mention non-interesting.
Basically I’m still waiting for someone to explain the point of Twitter to me. ;)
I have a Twitter account, but I literally used it for about 2 hours, 7 months ago. I am way too over stimulated, and I prefer blogging. I only check Facebook once a week! I guess I just don’t get it.
Since I don’t believe that anyone cares if I just did the dishes, put the trash out and patted the dog on the head, I don’t twitter. Of all the forms of electronic communication, twittering and texting are two that I just do not see the point for.
Ronnica, I was SHOCKED to see you (a grammar expert) use the phrase “if you could care less”. Technically, it should be “if you could not care less”. One of those misused phrases that bug me. I’ll let this one pass, as long as I never see you use what may be the most annoying of all non-words: “irregardless”! Like finger nails on a chalkboard.
OK, sorry for getting off the subject. Have fun tweeting. Please don’t tweet and drive though. :)
@Jenn: Two accounts? I think you may have a problem…
@Carrie: Yeah, I don’t care about quite the mundane details, but everyone keeps trying to get me to blog the more day-to-day stuff. I guess this is a happy medium…it’s there, but not a part of the regular blog.
@OneMom: I am by NO MEANS a grammar expert, just a grammar dabbler. Yes, I should have known better, but since it hasn’t (yet) become a phrase that bugs me, I didn’t catch it. I’m fixing it now…thanks for being the iron that sharpens! (Oh, and I did a search of my blog, and I did use “irregardless” once. Glad you didn’t catch it…or have forgotten about it!)
And I guess I’ve already gone down the slippery slope because I LOVE texting. It’s a great substitute for talking on the phone, which I dislike. NOT a good substitute for face-to-face conversations, emails, and letters.
Although I’ve been on twitter for awhile, I am really just getting into it in a big way. I wish I had tips, but I don’t. Just play around with it for awhile and get the feel for it.
Ronnica – compared to a lot of what is posted on the internet, you are most definitely a grammar expert; your love of reading alone helps with that.
When I was teaching I had a student that would often say that he “could care less”, and I would reply to him “aww, that means you really do care!”. I use to drive him nuts. As an old English minor, it falls into the same category for me as the “can I/may I” mistake.
I apparently didn’t see the “irregardless” usage, I’ll let it pass this time. :D
I am so confused about twitter, seriously. I feel like a dork. I have it set up but I don’t use it and I don’t have time to sit looking at it and do people really care about what I am doing every moment of the day?
@Julie: I do! Okay, maybe not every moment of the day. I see it more of a way to provide small snippets (too small to blog) on a more frequent basis for all those who want to know more about my day-to-day. Anyone else can ignore it.
twitter is the one thing I refuse to join! haha.
I had some issues with Twitter a few weeks ago, where people who knew me professionally were following me on Twitter, and I wasn’t always professional.
So keep that in mind sometimes. But other than that, no advice. Play around with it. Twitter is easy to figure out.
@Kristen: Me too…until 2 days ago! Actually, I think in the back of my mind I always knew I would cave, I just didn’t know when.
@MinD: I hope everything worked out! I don’t think I’ll have a problem, but I’ll definitely keep it in mind!
I am SO not a tweeter…to many websites to maintain already lol.
Thanks for stoppin by and commenting on my blog! Have a great evening. ;)
Dawn
hey! I tweet. but i dont know any rules… I just dont like the people who tweet every five minutes…i totally drop following them cause its annoying. lol.
Added! I’m @LivitLuvit
I have a twitter account. I’m not on it very much. Sometimes I don’t see the point and sometimes I do. I haven’t really figured out what the big draw is or all it has to offer yet. I’ll definitely follow you!
I twitter, but I am not a heavy user, maybe a tweet or two a day. I like for exactly the reason you talked about but I don’t see myself becoming an addict. I just don’t have the time for it.
I tweet as WhisperAmber!
Sometimes I don’t think I’m very interesting though. Ahh well. I just don’t feel the need to write every little detail. Such as, “Bladder full, gotta pee.” I think that’s TMI.
@Rachel: Don’t tweet every 5 minutes…got it!
@Amber: Speaking of bladders…
I joined Twitter for the same reason just the other day. Sometimes I want to post a little tid-bit that doesn’t fit into a whole post.
