What I Love about Teaching

I teach Sunday school to kindergartners.  Though it’s not my profession (perhaps it will be someday), I love it.

When their eyes are drawn to the object in my hand, I love teaching.

When they let me play with their hair, I love teaching.

When their mouths hang open in disbelief at something neat and fascinating I’ve shared with them, I love teaching.

When they joyfully welcome a new friend they just met, I love teaching.

When I get to practically apply one-on-one what we’ve been learning to their personal struggles, I love teaching.

When they hang on every word and get frustrated when I pause or switch gears, I love teaching.

When they start making connections demonstrating they’re really getting the lesson, I love teaching.

When they draw a picture showing they get the lesson, I love teaching.

When they see me down the hall and can’t wait to give me a hug, I love teaching.

When a parent tells me their child has chosen to follow Christ, making what I’ve been teaching them their own, I love teaching.

  1. I wanted to be an elementary school teacher when I was in high school, but I quickly realized it wasn’t my niche. Kindergarteners are so bright eyed, though!

  2. I often considered teaching, but realized I simply did not have the patience for it. Major kudos to you for not only having that patience, but loving teaching so much.

  3. Amen! You’ve got the best of both worlds…you’re in an inspirational classroom by choice, with a group of kiddos who-for the most part, I’m guessing-really want to be there. The perfect storm for someone who loves teaching!

  4. They’re great at that age. It is wonderful seeing little lightbulbs going off. Thank you for teaching. I know so many churches struggle to find willing people to teach little ones.

  5. That is gorgeous! My mother was an elementary school teacher in a Catholic school and she absolutely loved the fact that she could incorporate her religion into her teaching. The children learned so much.

I love teaching but unfortunately I teach math to high school kids. They aren’t as receptive. :)

  6. @Kristina: “Bright-eyed” is a very good description of kindergartners!

@MinD: It’s a whole lot easier when you only have to do it once a week!

@Melissa: Yep, they want to be there, for the most part, as is the parental support as necessary.

@Joy: It’s really fascinating. I prefer working with the older kids, but this age picks up things at a much faster pace!

@Caity: Haha, if I ever become a “real” teacher, it’ll probably be HS math!

  7. Teaching is such a special thing! Especially to those little ones! They are like sponges sucking up everything you have to share! It’s so much fun, so humbling and so rewarding! I’m glad you get to be apart of that on Sundays!
