Book in Hand

Obviously not me, but I understand his read-anywhere attitude.

Obviously not me, but I understand his read-anywhere attitude.

I’m a reader.

Not that that’s anything new to most people that know me.  After all, I’m the chick that carries a book with her everywhere she goes.  I’m the one who is always referring things back to one book or another.  I’m the one who would oftentimes rather be home alone reading than out with friends.

What I mean when I say that “I’m a reader” is something more than that.

If there is any writing within in my eyesight, I must read it.  That’s why it bugs me when they put signs on the back of bathroom stall doors.  Every time I go to the bathroom at work (and with the quantities of water I drink, that’s a lot), I have to read the paragraph about how one should flush the toilet and not make a mess of the bathroom.

If there’s a cereal box or other package on the table while I’m eating, I read it.  All of it, including the nutrition facts that I just might prefer to ignore.  I think this is why I know that a can of Dr Pepper has 40 grams of sugar.  I wonder if this is why my mom always put cereal in Tupperware containers.

Perhaps my tendency to read everything in site is why I prefer to have a book with me.  If the reading material around me is scarce (and usually boring), who wants to read it over and over again?

Goodmorning FGD…And do you know that I didn’t enjoy reading until I was 42. And it was your Mother who took me to the library to get my library card. Now, I read all the time…and keep track of the books I read. How fun it is. I remember those Tupperware containers…no writing on them.
    Blessings…May angels be with you…

I must say, that’s a lot of reading. Do you have any idea why you do that? Is it because you’re afraid you’ll miss out on something important? Is it a craving for knowledge? What?

Liz: I’m not sure why I do that, but I’ve done it for as long as I can remember (I was 4 or 5 when I learned to read, and haven’t stopped since!). I’m so visual, so I think that has something to do with it, and the craving knowledge thing probably does to. Because of my reading habits, I know a lot of random, unconnected facts, and my friends tend to role their eyes when I bring them up!

I am the same exact way! TMI, but when I’m in the bathroom “for awhile” I read whatever is close, usually the bottle of bathroom cleaner or air freshener. I’ve read those A LOT!

When I make meals, I make sure that I have something to read, for when I’m eating, it’s part of the preparation!

Signs same thing. Someone had posted a sign in their yard and every time I drove by it would make me nuts that I couldn’t read it, so I took the kids for a walk, soul purpose to go and read the sign. It was a disappointing sign, the spelling was horrific, not that I’m the queen of spelling, because I’m not, I’m sure I’ve probably spelling things wrong in this comment, but this sign, was really bad.

Ok, my rambling stops here ;)

I do it too, especially if I’m a passenger in a car. If you hear me mumbling, but I’m not singing, chances are I’m reading the nearby billboards semi-out loud.

You know, I could have totally written this post! I have to read everything around me! I get twitchy if I have to go too long without reading something, it’s almost like a drug withdrawal. I mean, I even take my book with me to the bus stop while waiting for Emma to get off, even though the bus stop is right across the street from our house.

Yes, I am the crazy lady reading a book in someone else’s driveway. :-)

I also read while watching TV, read while taking a bath, read while cooking…you get the idea.

Emma is getting to be the same way. Even though she can’t read independently yet, she will still grab a book when we go in the car somewhere, and she also takes one to look at on the bus to/from school.

I’m the same way as well. Food products, warnings, billboards and road signs(which I read frontwards AND backwards), copyright information…

The worst is the packets that come with prescribed medication. I’m terrified to take any medication because I actually read all the possible side effects. Then, if I do take the medication, I’m on constant alert because I’ve read the signs to watch for that indicate your body isn’t handling the medication.

Since I was a little kid, I have always read anything with words on it. Cereal boxes, shampoo bottles, newspapers, anything in front of me.

My 7 year old daughter is now the same way. If it has words, she has to read it.

Veronica: That’s why I carry a book with me EVERYWHERE.

Katie: Have you ever watched Forget Paris? The father-in-law reads EVERYTHING aloud…hilarious.

Jacki, OneMom: Another support of my theory that readers raise readers. A friend once asked me what I’d do if one of my children didn’t like to read…I can’t imagine that. Anyone can be a reader, the difference is in what they prefer to read.

  10. Jacki Says:

You are on to something with that theory…my mom reads even more than I do.

  11. Ari Says:

Omg you’re my long lost twin! Seriously, I do that… I was reading the back of a ziplock box today and was worried the girl that it belonged to was going to move it before I was done reading. Lol.

  12. MinD Says:

Ugh, I’m the same way and sometimes, it drives me nuts! Like the note on the back of our work bathroom door that says to not flush tampons or other things down the toilet because it will clog. Every time I pee, I read it. I know it by heart!

  13. Katy Says:

I heart reading! I definitely always carry a book with me when I can.

  14. BPOTW Says:

Sadly, I have to have a lot of time in one interval to read, otherwise, I forget what happened and have to start over. I envy those who can read and do other things at the same time.
