Tis the Season, Huh?

I don’t like Halloween.

I stopped Trick or Treating at 10.  I realized I could have more fun handing out candy at the door, and could still get the chocolate I wanted from my brother’s Trick or Treat pumpkin (he couldn’t have it…it wasn’t like I was stealing it).  I also realized that if I didn’t go by people’s houses, they wouldn’t feel compelled to try to scare me.

I think the people-jumping-out-at-you part is one of the major reasons I don’t like this holiday.  I just don’t get how that could be fun.  I actually dislike the whole concept so much, that I refuse to play hide-and-go-seek with any kids I babysit.

Another reason I dislike Halloween is the raunchiness of it.  In college, it seemed like Halloween was just an excuse to dress up extra-raunchy before getting wasted.  Somehow, that’s not appealing to me in the least bit.

Then there’s the whole darkness of Halloween: the witches, the ghosts, the ghouls.  Since I don’t think such things exist, I guess I just miss the point.

So, while others might enjoy the holiday, I must say that I just don’t get it.  That’s why Saturday night the only reason I’m going out is to serve the children at our church’s Halloween alternative.

Yeah I hear ya, I’m not a fan of Halloween either. Same reason why I have no plans this weekend.

We are wishy washy about Halloween. We don’t really celebrate – meaning we don’t decorate, we don’t really plan costumes, we don’t trick or treat. But this year the girls have been invited to parties and want to dress up. I like the families that have invited them so I don’t mind if they participate. All of my kids say they don’t celebrate Halloween so… ???

I hope that you have a great week.

I’m sorry to hear you don’t like Halloween. I absolutely LOVE it, even if I know what you’re saying about the raunchiness of it. It always used to super annoy me in college that it seemed like an excuse to dress like a slut and get wasted.
that’s not supposed to be what halloween’s about!

OR….you could come help us pick out flower girl dresses this weekend…!

YEAH for you, FGD…Amen, Amen, and Amen. Such a satanistic day…

I’m with you. When I was a kid, I certainly wanted the candy, but I was always scared of masks and people trying to scare me. I didn’t even like handing out candy at the door because all those scary people were coming to my house. The Lord says that we have not been given a spirit of fear, but of peace, love and a sound mind. I don’t think we as Christians ought to get caught up in such things, especially when the origins of the holiday are Satanic.

I loved Halloween as a kid, I tried to get as much candy as possible, plus it was fun to hang out with friends. College your right, it was getting dressed up and getting wasted.

Now that I have kids, I think it’s fun for them. But I hate taking them around, I get scared too easily, so Brian does it.

I don’t like when people decorate their houses with non-kid friendly things. This one house in our neighborhood had severed heads on stakes lining their lawn. I was so creeped out I wouldn’t drive by it.

We don’t do Halloween either, we go out to eat instead. Talk about great service. :)

Just last year, the girls decided they wanted to dress up to go out to eat. Cue the old dance costumes and we’re good to go. :)

It’s actually quite interesting, but the past few years we have seen fewer kids trick-or-treating and more churches and organizations hosting harvest parties and such. So at least in our area, the kids and families are forgoing the trick-or-treating for alternative activities. I wonder why?

I am with you on the skanky costumes out there for girls and women! It is ridiculous! Naughty-this and naughty-that.

So you’re like the Scrooge of Halloween, huh? You are the first person I’ve ever heard of not liking the holiday. Honest. THE first…

  11. Ronnica Says:

Amanda: Sounds fun…now how do I get there from here?

    G. Zoe and Liz: I wouldn’t say it had Satanic origins, but it’s certainly based on a different worldview.

MinD: That’s surprising…I know a lot of people who don’t like it. Certainly not for everyone.

I LOVE Halloween! Then again, dressing up was my favorite game as a kid. I agree that the slut/raunchy/drunk thing can be a real damper, but I love dressing up with my friends! Oh and Halloween marks 4 days until my birthday so that could be why I like it as well…

We’re going to our second annual Reformation Party that friends from church have. There will be their family, ours, and two others. It’s an alternative to Halloween.

I loved Halloween growing up. I probably stopped when I was 12 or so, but my dad took me and some friend around the neighborhoods every year. For me it was just fun bonding time with my dad and getting lots of candy. i don’t generally think about the origins of Halloween and don’t think that many other people do either. I think most people think it’s just a fun holiday to dress up and go get candy (or, unfortunately, get wasted…I’m not about the college raunchiness eiether). I do agree that I don’t like it when neighbors aren’t kid friendly. This will be the first year we’ve taken our daughter trick or treating. I hope she’s not terrified by some crazy person!

  15. carol Says:

I enjoy Halloween. Our neighborhood is not much into scaring the kids, just giving out candy and one of us always goes with our daughter. She usually wears a costume my mom or I make, so none of these barely there outfits. It amazes me the clothes and costumes they sell, even for littler kids. We don’t do scary things, like haunted houses, though.

  16. RhondaLue Says:

Well, I don’t care for Halloween for ME. BUT I LOVE IT FOR MY KIDS! IT’s just fun making ghost tootsie pops and reading fun (but not scary) books to them. They are so excited about dressing up and having a spooky tablecloth and carved pumpkins that it makes Halloween my favorite holiday. No presents to buy, just FUN halloween movies (Casper, It’s the Great pumpkin Charlie Brown, etc.) I do like to be a little bit scared. The kind of surprise scared that makes you laugh and scream all at once but doesn’t make you afraid to go into a dark room. lol

Hope saturday is still fun for ya. We have a church alternative too. We do dress up still but we have a “trunk or treat” where members give candy by the trunks of their cars. They decorate them and have prizes and we eat chili & cornbread and have pumpkin carving contests. It’s so fuN!

I’m not a fan of it for a lot of the same reasons either. I will end up going to the 5pm Mass on Halloween instead and then sitting on my computer for the evening, most likely. :P

Hi, stopping by from BPOTW! :)

I don’t knwo about the dressing up sexily but the drunken behavior was definitely on display at the party i attended last night.

  19. BPOTW Says:

I agree. If you ever really researched the reasoning behind halloween and all that goes with it, it really isn’t a very nice thing…those druids and threatening to kill your kids…yuck.
