World Travel

departureI spend a lot of time pondering.  There’s a lot of subjects I ponder (do we all see colors the same, will we sleep in heaven, will we one day have electronic chips in our heads to communicate instead of cell phones), but one that I come back to again and again is the marvel that is modern transportation.

I enjoy reading missionary biographies, and to read about their commitment to the cause is incredible.  When they set sail for India or China without having  a clue of the conditions they would face, they were leaving for good with no thought of coming back “home.”  It took a lot of time and money to travel (not to mention that it was miserable) so it was a one-time thing usually.

And here I am two days away from jetting halfway across the world for the third time to spend one week in Turkey.  ONE WEEK.

I can’t get over how easy this is.  Not that it’s entirely pleasant or that everything about it is easy, but the stress and worries related to world travel now are nothing compared to what they were 150 years ago.

I know I’m incredibly blessed.

While we’re on the topic, if you could go anywhere in the world, where would you go? I always say that I want to go back to Turkey (check), go to Rome (hopefully this summer), and go to Australia (no plans in the works, other than reading the Tomorrow series).  How about you?

  1. I LOVED korea… want to go back….

and I want to go back to GUAM SO BAD and show it to my husband…. while Im out there Id like a quick trip to the philippines…..

  2. I am scared to death of traveling across the ocean. If I had the money and the guts, and general security and safety were not an issue, I would be in Israel and Egypt in a heartbeat.

  3. I always wanted to go to Denmark, the birthplace of my materal grandparents. When I retired, I decided i didn’t want to do that afterall. Now, staying home in my “homey” apartment is wonderful each day, and I just look forward more and more going to be with JESUS.

  4. I might have missed the post, but you are going to Turkey… how cool is that. What will you do there? I would love to to too many places to mention. I cannot wait till heaven and I can see it all! Have a great trip!

  5. Well, I haven’t been to so many places it would be hard to choose just one to go to! I’d love to go to Spain and Greece, the Bahamas, and India! And, hey, I wonder about the color question too. Like if what if my green is your orange but we call it the same thing? Ha!

  6. Cheryl: Flying over the ocean is no different than flying over the continent, really. It’s usually cloudy or dark (or both, I suppose) over the ocean, so I’ve never seen it in the 6 times I’ve flown over it. I DO want to see Egypt and Israel, though…add in Jordan, Syria, and Lebanon too!

    G. Zoe: I would like to go to Denmark. I hope to have the opportunity to see more of Europe at some point, as I’d like to go to Germany, Denmark, France, and England.

Julie: Yep, no problem. I’ll email you more details (and more will be coming, believe me!).

Elizabeth: Spain is awesome! I definitely want to go back. Madrid was the most navigable city I’ve ever been to…and it’s fun, too!

  7. I’ll go to Rome with you! Always wanted to go there, and Italy. I would like to go back to England, I loved it there. I went to Australia earlier this year – loved it!

Hmm, that’s an interesting thought – if we all see colors the same way. I never considered that.

  8. I marvel about modern travel, too. Every time I fly home, I think that my great, great grandparents moved to Kansas from Virginia in a wagon and it took weeks. WEEKS. In what now takes me two hours. It is amazing. Could they have even begun to have imagined that? And what will things be like in 100 years? Boggles the mind.

  9. I, too, am always awed by the wonders of travel. Every time I take a trip I think about how I woke up on one city/country and will go to sleep in another. And how amazing that is.

The place I most want to visit is Egypt. I would love to see the pyramids and the Valley of the Kings. And mummies. I love mummies!
