Volunteerism

helping_handToday’s a big day for our organization, as I’ll have over 20 volunteers under my oversight.  They’ll be stuffing packets for our tax clients county-wide, and a few long-term volunteers will start the new season of tax preparation.  We’re a non-profit, and much of what we do would not be possible without volunteers.  Their time is invaluable to us, because if they didn’t volunteer, it would cost us thousands of dollars more to run our programs, thousands we do not have.  Simply put: without volunteers, we wouldn’t offer the free services we do.

If you don’t regular volunteer, I encourage you to do so.  Though there are seasons of life where volunteering isn’t as practical, I think there is almost always something that you can do.  If you have kids, there are many ways you can get them involved as well.

As the volunteer organizer as our organization, I see both sides of the picture.  I know the value of the volunteer.  As a volunteer for other programs/events, I feel the joy that comes from helping others.  While I don’t think that joy should be the primary reason why we volunteer, I think that it is a wonderful bonus.

So thanks to those who give their time in the service of others.  Though you may not always feel appreciated, you are doing a good thing.

  1. AMEN and AMEN…I think of the years, places, people where I have voluteered. The friendships formed are so special. I think I have always received more than was given. And today, DR. MARTIN LUTHER KING Day, everyone is so encouraged to do something. Something I do each day that I so enjoy here at the apartments is to put out and bring in our precious FLAG. Such an honor for me.

  2. I have to agree with you. Volunteering is so important. It’s wonderful to see how much you appreciate the people who volunteer at your organization. Believie it or not, this is not always the case.

  3. I agree wholeheartedly! I keep thinking I need to drop everything and get on down to Haiti, but realize I’d only be in the way. There are so many things that I can do here to help…

  4. i always tell my kids there is always “something” we can do. Sometimes it is a simple volunteering thing and other times it’s a big one. When I was working nights and had little babies at home, I would volunteer at habitat for humanity 1 day each year. It was just one day, but I’d get a sitter for ALL day. Also, I did baby quilts for the childrens hospital for their “quilt for every bed” program. currently, I am working on coordinating a fund raiser to help our girls at church have a great church “girls camp”. there is always something, whether big or small.
