Smileys Anonymous

A post about my move is still coming.  I had intended to post it today, but I need my real camera (which is at work) to take decent pictures…phone pictures just won’t do for my fun blue room!

I have a problem.

I’m addicted to smileys (especially of the =), ;) and =P variety).

And LOLs. (which has gotten so bad that I start to think “lol”)

I need help.

I’m pretty sure that I was able to write without them at one point.  I don’t think they ever slipped into a paper during my school days.

But today I can’t seem to write a text or a blog comment without them.

Help!

  1. Jessica: WOW. Jen did have someone write “WTF” on one of their papers so she had to let them know that she did in fact know what that stood for!

  2. I think I have actually said “Lol” out loud before. That was embarrassing! I struggle with this “lol” thing too though, recently, I’ve been just writing it in all of my messages, and then going back and editing it out. I tend to use it when I’m trying to say could be taken multiple ways, and I want to make sure people take it the way I intended.

  3. I try not to use the acronyms and smileys in my posts and comments, but it never works. It must be meant to be ;) (see?!)

Thanks for visiting my blog earlier! Hope to see you again soon, I’ll be back!

  4. Hi Ronnica, Found you through WOW. Your stuff is fun! Since you’re in nonprofit (as am I), you might enjoy my posting from two weeks ago (“Reconsidering the Names of Things”). It was inspired, of all things, by the fundraising software I use! (I swear, there’s an idea lurking everywhere!)

I’m happy to know about your blog,
    Katie

  5. Me too, Ronnica! And I always tell myself, “If you’ve written your comment well do you REALLY have to tell people to laugh? (or smile or whatEV). But I don’t want to be misunderstood so these acronyms and emoticons are my default setting on FB and blog comments. Ugh. :(

  6. I love… LOVE LOVE LOVE… smileys. They communicate humor, right? If you are trying to be humorous, and you HOPE the reader realizes the what you are trying to communicate, what better way to express it than ” :) ” ? Just gotta love a good smiley :D

  7. Jessica: I haven’t YET done that, but it’s got to be coming. Sad…

Natalie: Yeah, I haven’t succeeded, either.

LiLu: There’s the rub. I like to be sarcastic, but without tone of voice and facial expressions, sarcasm just comes off as cruel.

    Katie: Thanks, and welcome!

Robynn: That’s what I think too. But then why do I still feel I need them?

  8. I’ve been thinking in twitter #hashtags lately. I find myself inserting them into emails and other places where it is totally inappropriate and probably not understood by my non-twitter friends.
