When I got contacted about reviewing Love on Assignment, I laughed as it was just within my proposed historical fiction time period (1900 to present), being set in 1900.
Love on Assignment is the story of Charlotte Hale, an aspiring newspaper reporter who takes an undercover job as a governess as it’s the only investigative work ever been afforded her. She runs into trouble, though, when she realizes that the object of the investigation, Daniel Wilmont, has secrets, but not of the kind he’s been accused of (having an inappropriate relationship with a female student at the college he teaches at). Where does Charlotte’s loyalties lie: with her employer with shady motives or with the professor who she admires?
Love on Assignment is a quick read, predictable but well-written. If you have any interest in the turn of the century or in Christian romance, you would likely like it. For me, it was a good break from my usual fare of YA, memoirs, and heavier fiction. While I would have liked to have read more about her experiences being thrown into the position of governess to Wilmont’s two children, they probably would have bogged down the narrative.
I have a copy of Love on Assignment to give away. Simply leave a comment on this post. Make sure you include a way for me to contact you.
