The Day I Got Fired

Would you fire this girl?

Okay, so you’ll get more answers sooner than I had thought.

I work at a small non-profit, and for a few months now, I’ve been aware (and been made aware: I have an awesome boss) that there was some uncertainty as to our future. Basically, some of the regulatory changes in the past few years have made some of what we do unnecessary. Plus, very few industries have been insulated in this economy…and ours wasn’t one of them. For us, this economy has meant that some of our previous funders are no longer in a place to provide grant money.

All that to say, it came as no surprise when “the man” came in to shut us down yesterday. My last day is Monday (Happy Halloween!).

So what’s next for me? Well, finding another job, of course! I’ve already done a little bit of investigative work, but will be hitting it hardcore now. I’ve been very blessed at my current job to work with people I’ve enjoyed working with and doing something I love (our free tax program). Seriously, I can count on one hand the days that I’ve really not enjoyed here in the almost 6 1/2 years I’ve been here. I hope to find another job like that, albeit learning new things.

There is some sadness to the fact that this phase in my life is ending, but I’ve been anticipating that. I’ve already dreamed of what I want to do “when I grow up.”

I guess I’ll find out first hand just how bad the hiring market is. I think I’m a good candidate since I’ve worked in the non-profit sector for 6, meaning I don’t require the big bucks.

  1. INTERESTING…How exciting to see what GOD is going to have you do next. I know you are open for HIS leading. More prayers, prayers, prayers.

  2. I’m so sorry to read this! I work at a small non-profit (on the industry-education level) and what you describe has been happening here. Makes me so nervous.

    I’ll be praying for you.

  3. Oh I’m sorry dear. That stinks.

But, your outfit is very cute!

Advice from someone who has been unemployed: apply for unemployment benefits right away. There is no waiting period to see if you qualify — (people like to tell you this… the fact is the waiting period they’re thinking of is that it takes about three weeks to process your claim and get your first check… so the point is, don’t put it off. )
Also, you can work part-time to supplement your unemployment benefits. Yes you can. Depending on the regulations in your state… you can work up to 31 hours a week, report your hours and your pay and still get about half of your unemployment benefits… this makes your benefits last longer.

This can be a nice experience to try something you think you might enjoy. Of the few jobs out there.. there will be some holiday hiring… so if you ever thought it would be fun to work at Victoria’s Secret (it’s not in my opinion,) or at Starbucks… go try it out. I worked at a department store portrait studio when I was unemployed and I just loved it. In fact, now that I’m back in my career field, I find that I was happier when I was at the minimum wage job… I just couldn’t live on it full time.

The point of my lengthy comment is that… while unemployment is scary, it’s not necessarily terrifying. Just take care of yourself… and embrace opportunities. You’ll get through it. :-)

  4. Bummer! But, and I honestly from the depths of my being believe, everything happens for a reason. I’m definitely a glass is half full type. I could throw a few more cliches at you, closing window/opening door, but I think you get the idea. You’re a smart, resourceful woman, I have no doubt you’ll find something fantastic in no time. Best of luck!

  5. Sorry to hear about your job, Ronnica. It’s always sad when a really good chapter of life closes. I hope you find something else that’s just as good or better.
