Welcome to the New Me!

Okay, I’m not new, but the blog is!  Love my new design?  I do!  I think Jessica did a great job of catching the essence of this blog and creating a unique look for me.

I hope you have a great weekend!

From the Belly of Tax Season

What, a new post on the Ignorant Historian? I must admit, I never thought that the tax season would swallow me whole as it has.  I had those three days of much-needed relaxation, and then I’ve had three crazy days of taxes…and it’s just the beginning.  Until April 15th, I’ll have little free computer time.   Not that it’s a BAD thing…I love what I’m doing and I still have time for other priorities, but unfortunately blogging seems far down that list.

I don’t WANT to quit this blog, but at this moment, I can’t think of what to say.  I prefer to hold to a if-you-don’t-have-anything-to-say-don’t-blog philosophy, but clearly this post goes against that idea.

I do have a couple ideas for meaningful posts rolling around in my head.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, really) to share those posts with you in the next week(s).

Perhaps you could help me out, though…what would YOU want me to blog about?  I need some help to get back into a blogging mindset!

Thanks each and every one of you for taking the time to read this here blog.  Your comments have been encouraging even when I haven’t had the time to let you know that.

Tis the Season

Sorry to so abruptly drop off the blogosphere.  I rely on downtime to blog, but didn’t have ANY of that Wednesday or Thursday.  I’m actually looking forward to the tax season (starts Monday) so that things get LESS harried…or at least everything on my end will be set up, so it’ll just be keeping the wheels (volunteers) greased (feed with gratitude).

I’m actually really excited, but like last year, there isn’t a lot I can share on the blog.  We see some interesting characters for sure…but I’m afraid I’ll have to leave it at that.  I’m sure you can use your imagination!

So that’s enough ramblings for a Friday.  I do hope to keep up with blogging…know that I’m not planning on quitting, even if I’m not as bloggy as before!

All or Nothing

cakesI’m an all-or-nothing person.  Probably always have been.  I don’t like things being halfway, don’t like unresolved issues or projects, and don’t like to commit partway.

I suppose this is the part of me that’s prone to addiction.  Once I have something I like, I want to have it again and again.  I go to the same restaurants over and over, ordering the same thing, until I find my new favorite thing.  This is why I stay away from drinking…why play with fire?

This blog topic was put forth by Rodney Olsen, as he answered the question I tweeted the other night (“Read, blog, or watch TV?”) with “Read a little, watch a little TV, then blog about it. :)”.  The idea repulsed me…how do you expect me to plan to split up my night?  A night should be devoted to one cause!

I realized that’s probably not a normal response.  That’s okay, I know I’m not normal.  But seriously, I do tend to devote my time like that.  Today will all be for reading, or blogging, or writing, or cleaning, or watching TV.  That sort of thing.  When I was a student, it was like playing whack-a-mole: I’d work on one class until I was ahead and then turn around and do that for another that I was behind on.

To be fair, this is more the “ideal” for me and not always how it works out.  I might decide to devote myself to reading, and then get the urge to watch an episode of House, so I’ll change my mind right there, stopping in mid-sentence.  But it’s always like that…a quick, instantaneous decision.  One moment I’m heading in one direction, then the next I’m heading in another.

Waiting to make a decision is hard for me.  I want to have my mind made up at all times, and usually do.  I guess I always want to have things figured out, even if it works out in a different way than I planned.  I’ve been working on a more godly, fruit-of-the-Spirit-filled decision making process.

My commitment to blogging is just like that.  I just can’t see doing it on and off again.  If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it.

So, how about you?  What kind of person you are?  How does it manifest itself?

That’s 800 ‘Round These Parts

800

I find it interesting that my big blog days fall on days when blogging is naturally at a low.  Five hundred posts was Christmas, and now 800 posts is the day before Thanksgiving.  No problem though…I may have posted 800 times, but it’s not like they’re all of substance!

I know that many of you will be traveling today, so please stay safe!  I’m not traveling yet, as I prefer to fly on Thanksgiving morning…MUCH cheaper that way and less stressful, too.  While I’m in Kansas not only will I be enjoying Thanksgiving with the family, but I also will be hosting my first shower for my favoritest brother and sister.  Should be a lot of fun!

So, thanks for being with me for 800 posts…and here’s to 800 more!

What Have I Missed?

I’ve been a little out of pocket lately, considering I’ve been half a world away.  I know it’s not realistic to think I’ll catch up on everything you all have written over the last week and half.  So, help me know what I need to read!

What post of yours did I really miss out by not reading?

Worth Checking Out

Seems like this week has decided to be as busy as a few of the past weeks.  Really, it’s good, right?  So if I have stopped coming by your blogs, you can be assured that THAT is the reason, not something you’ve said/did/didn’t say/didn’t do.

So, in part because of my busyness and in part to be nice to my latest bloggy buddies, I’m copying Caity AGAIN.  This time, I want to point out some recent blog finds that I think are great!  Basically, I haven’t been reading them much lately, so I think someone should.  Seriously though…they’re worth checking out!

blog_teasinglydiverse

Amanda (previously went by Chere) at Teasingly Diverse. I’m trying to remember all the reasons I like her blog, but really, it boils down to the fact that she reminds me of me.  Does that make me vain?  I mean, we have a lot of the same interests and things!  Except for the Ducks…I prefer my sports team’s mascots to be inanimate objects.

blog_curiousillusion

Ari at Curious Illusion. She blogs about her obsession with her new iPhone and the cattiness of her new co-workers.

blog_canadianchalkboard

Ashley (I’m sensing an “A” theme!) at Canadian Chalkboard. She’s a real recent find, but I find her experience with the Canadian school system facinating.

blog_joyfortheseasons

Cheryl at Joy for the Seasons. She’s not new to blogging (though this one is new) nor is she new to me (I’ve known her since having her oldest in Sunday school 4 years ago).  But her blog is worth checking out, so she goes on this list!

Well, that’s enough for now.  What a recent blog you’ve discovered that worth checking out?

This is Not a Post

As the unofficial last day of summer (according to me, and for me only), I’m not going to post today.  Of course, I had to post to tell you that, because I know if there’s one thing you’re expecting here at the Ignorant Historian, it’s my clockwork posting.  This lack of post might also have something to do with the fact that I don’t have any light subjects to post about and I will only post a light subject on Friday.

So there you go, I’m taking a break.  See you Monday!

Words

Melissa, AKA the Scholastic Scribe, gave me 5 words.  In turn, I’m to write about these words and what they mean to me.  Comprendo?  Let’s go! (There’s a bit of audience involvement at the end…don’t be shy!)

Here are my words.  I must say, she did a great job of picking them out…they are words I’m passionate about!

Blogging

To be honest, I don’t really remember why I started blogging.  I wanted to keep up with my friends, I suppose, but that was rather fleeting.  When I started 3 years ago, I had no idea that I’d grow to love it so much.  From the opportunity I have to practice and share my writing to the great comments I receive, there’s so much to love about blogging.

Faith

cross red

Now this one’s a biggie, isn’t it?  If you’ve read the Ignorant Historian for any length of time, you know my faith is important to me.  It’s more than an intellectual pursuit or an emotional fulfillment.  It’s really all about the object of my faith, the Lord Jesus Christ.  He’s my Creator, Savior, and Sustainer, and because of that, I owe Him everything.

You probably also know that I don’t like to leave my faith at the church steps when I leave Sunday afternoon.  Though I’m by no means perfect, I strive to apply my faith to every aspect of my life, from my interactions with others to how I spend my free time.

Friends

I don’t talk a whole lot about them on the blog, but I have some great friends.  I’m at a time in my life where I don’t have as many friends as I’ve had before, but the ones that I have are deep ones.  I’m thankful they put up with my quirkiness (really, you don’t see half of it on the blog) and that they’re willing to share life with me.  Without my friends, I’d probably be a hermitress, so I definitely owe them for that.

Words

reference books

So, one of my words is “words.”  Quite circular, no?  I really do like words…when I write a blog post I sometimes spend several minutes agonizing over the just right word.  For me, it’s not about picking out the biggest word, it’s about picking the most accurate word.  I try to leave no room for interpretation so that I’m not misunderstood.  Come to think about it, this might also contribute to my disinterest in poetry…so often the words can be taken multiple ways.  I just wish that I could be as careful about my oral speech!

History

Obviously, I like history or I wouldn’t have called this blog the Ignorant Historian (though that itself is taken from the Jane Austen quote, something else I love!).  I was a history major in my undergrad, and several of my favorite courses were history classes, whether at OU or at seminary.

temple ruins

When I was deciding on whether or not to be a history major during my junior year (my other two options I was considering were linguistics and letters–history, philosophy, and languages), I took a class in colonial South American history.  That’s when I fell in love…the professor was a storyteller.

Really, that’s what history is, stories about people.  I don’t get how many people *cough* my current and former roommates *cough* don’t like history.  Perhaps they’ve never had a good history professor, so they’ve come to think of history as a collection of uninteresting facts.  That’s not it at all!

So there are my 5 words.  Now it’s your turn…would you like 5 words?  Just ask in the comments, and I’ll serve you up 5 personalized words for you to ponder and write about!

I Give You a Panda

CommentsAward

One of my favorite parts about blogging is receiving feedback on what I write.  Did I make you laugh? I’d love to know.  Do you disagree with me? I’d love to know that to.  Have you had a similar thing happen to you?  By all means tell!

Because of that, I’m thankful for you, my faithful commenters.  I appreciate each and every comment I get, but there are a few people that go above and beyond the call of duty (what? you didn’t know that commenting on the Ignorant Historian was a duty?).  To these, I give you the Super Comments Award (thanks, Pam!):
