Thank You, Thank You

For about a month now I’ve been a part of a growing blog community called Words of Wisdom which highlights bloggers who provide great content, or “blog posts that are thought-provoking and/or insightful.”  Today I’m honored that they are highlighting me.

Not the best picture of me, but the most recent one I could find!

For those who are visiting here from WOW, I should share a little about me.  I’m Ronnica, a 27-year-old single woman who has lived in North Carolina for almost 5 years now.  I moved here for graduate school and got “stuck” as I love my church family SO much.

I work at a non-profit where I wear many different hats, but my favorite is running our free tax service (so now I’m breathing easier, post-April 15).  I’ve been blogging for almost 4 years now, and named my blog the Ignorant Historian because of my love of history and reading (it’s from a Jane Austen quote).

Most of all, I hope to be defined by who my Savior is and the work He’s doing in me.

Here are three posts that I think will give you a good taste of the Ignorant Historian:

A Case for Civil Discourse

Defined

These Nights are Numbered

Thanks for stopping by!  I love sharing what I have to say (and never seem to run out of things to talk about), and it’s always great having people to discuss it with!

If you’ve never heard of WOW, I recommend checking it out.  I’ve already found some great bloggers worth reading through it.

Contra Dancing, Anyone?

This post is TWO YEARS old, sitting in my drafts folder. We ended up not going contra dancing that night after all (not my decision, but I was incredibly grateful!). I decided to save it for whenever they wanted me to go again…but fortunately was never asked. I think you’ll agree that it’s rather timeless.

Tonight I’m going out with some friends to go contra dancing. Don’t know what contra dancing is? I really don’t either. All I know is that it’s a dance kinda like line dancing or square dancing. Okay. What I CAN tell you is that this is a very big step for me.

Since this is list month:

Why I Don’t Want to Go Contra Dancing Tonight

1. I generally avoid excessive physical exertion. Swimming is my exercise of choice. Swimming =/= dancing.

2. I’m not a good dancer and avoid having to prove it.

3. Apart from a brief stint in a ballet class in middle school, I’ve never danced in public.

4. My to-do list is growing by the day.

5. I haven’t a clue how to contra dance.

Yet,

Why I Am Going to Go Contra Dancing Tonight

1. Friends who desire my good (I think) have pressed me to go.

2. I believe that you should try something before you say you don’t like it.

3. I said I would go if a certain other friend would go.

4. She apparently isn’t as hard headed and anti-dance as me and has agreed to go.

5. I gave my word.

If I live through this, I’ll let you know how it goes!

900th Post: Not Done Yet

When I first started blogging almost 4 years ago (or even better when I started Xanga-ing a year before that), I’d probably have laughed at you if you’d have told me that within 4 years time I’d have written 900 blog posts.

Sure, some are much more work than others, but I still seem to find plenty of things to say.  My to-blog list is growing faster than I cross things off of it (but certainly not growing as fast as my to-be-read list!).

I suppose it helps that I’m a talker.  While I’m introverted and reserved, once I get comfortable in a situation, I might just run my mouth (though interestingly, I seem to be attracted to friends who are even talkier than I am, so we can talk for days!).

It also helps that I’m quite opinionated…I have something to say about almost every subject under the sun.  An exaggeration, sure, but if I’ve been exposed to it, I likely have something to say.

And it can’t hurt that I have wonderful commenters who add to the discussion.  Reading other blogs (and those old-fashioned things called books) gets me thinking and fuels my writing.  And then you commenters add to my discussion of topics here, helping me to refine and sometimes correct my views.

So thanks for reading.  While this blog isn’t huge (and I seriously doubt it’d ever will be), it means a lot that anyone would take the time to read what I have to say.

Here’s to 900 more!

Isn’t it ironic that my 900th post falls on April 15th…my last day of tax season?  I hit 500 on Christmas and 800 on the day before Thanksgiving.  Let’s see…should I try to hit 1000 on Labor Day?

From the Belly of Tax Season

What, a new post on the Ignorant Historian? I must admit, I never thought that the tax season would swallow me whole as it has.  I had those three days of much-needed relaxation, and then I’ve had three crazy days of taxes…and it’s just the beginning.  Until April 15th, I’ll have little free computer time.   Not that it’s a BAD thing…I love what I’m doing and I still have time for other priorities, but unfortunately blogging seems far down that list.

I don’t WANT to quit this blog, but at this moment, I can’t think of what to say.  I prefer to hold to a if-you-don’t-have-anything-to-say-don’t-blog philosophy, but clearly this post goes against that idea.

I do have a couple ideas for meaningful posts rolling around in my head.  Hopefully, I’ll be able to put pen to paper (or fingers to keyboard, really) to share those posts with you in the next week(s).

Perhaps you could help me out, though…what would YOU want me to blog about?  I need some help to get back into a blogging mindset!

Thanks each and every one of you for taking the time to read this here blog.  Your comments have been encouraging even when I haven’t had the time to let you know that.

Tis the Season

Sorry to so abruptly drop off the blogosphere.  I rely on downtime to blog, but didn’t have ANY of that Wednesday or Thursday.  I’m actually looking forward to the tax season (starts Monday) so that things get LESS harried…or at least everything on my end will be set up, so it’ll just be keeping the wheels (volunteers) greased (feed with gratitude).

I’m actually really excited, but like last year, there isn’t a lot I can share on the blog.  We see some interesting characters for sure…but I’m afraid I’ll have to leave it at that.  I’m sure you can use your imagination!

So that’s enough ramblings for a Friday.  I do hope to keep up with blogging…know that I’m not planning on quitting, even if I’m not as bloggy as before!

All or Nothing

cakesI’m an all-or-nothing person.  Probably always have been.  I don’t like things being halfway, don’t like unresolved issues or projects, and don’t like to commit partway.

I suppose this is the part of me that’s prone to addiction.  Once I have something I like, I want to have it again and again.  I go to the same restaurants over and over, ordering the same thing, until I find my new favorite thing.  This is why I stay away from drinking…why play with fire?

This blog topic was put forth by Rodney Olsen, as he answered the question I tweeted the other night (“Read, blog, or watch TV?”) with “Read a little, watch a little TV, then blog about it. :)”.  The idea repulsed me…how do you expect me to plan to split up my night?  A night should be devoted to one cause!

I realized that’s probably not a normal response.  That’s okay, I know I’m not normal.  But seriously, I do tend to devote my time like that.  Today will all be for reading, or blogging, or writing, or cleaning, or watching TV.  That sort of thing.  When I was a student, it was like playing whack-a-mole: I’d work on one class until I was ahead and then turn around and do that for another that I was behind on.

To be fair, this is more the “ideal” for me and not always how it works out.  I might decide to devote myself to reading, and then get the urge to watch an episode of House, so I’ll change my mind right there, stopping in mid-sentence.  But it’s always like that…a quick, instantaneous decision.  One moment I’m heading in one direction, then the next I’m heading in another.

Waiting to make a decision is hard for me.  I want to have my mind made up at all times, and usually do.  I guess I always want to have things figured out, even if it works out in a different way than I planned.  I’ve been working on a more godly, fruit-of-the-Spirit-filled decision making process.

My commitment to blogging is just like that.  I just can’t see doing it on and off again.  If I’m going to do it, I’m going to do it.

So, how about you?  What kind of person you are?  How does it manifest itself?

That’s 800 ‘Round These Parts

800

I find it interesting that my big blog days fall on days when blogging is naturally at a low.  Five hundred posts was Christmas, and now 800 posts is the day before Thanksgiving.  No problem though…I may have posted 800 times, but it’s not like they’re all of substance!

I know that many of you will be traveling today, so please stay safe!  I’m not traveling yet, as I prefer to fly on Thanksgiving morning…MUCH cheaper that way and less stressful, too.  While I’m in Kansas not only will I be enjoying Thanksgiving with the family, but I also will be hosting my first shower for my favoritest brother and sister.  Should be a lot of fun!

So, thanks for being with me for 800 posts…and here’s to 800 more!

Worth Checking Out

Seems like this week has decided to be as busy as a few of the past weeks.  Really, it’s good, right?  So if I have stopped coming by your blogs, you can be assured that THAT is the reason, not something you’ve said/did/didn’t say/didn’t do.

So, in part because of my busyness and in part to be nice to my latest bloggy buddies, I’m copying Caity AGAIN.  This time, I want to point out some recent blog finds that I think are great!  Basically, I haven’t been reading them much lately, so I think someone should.  Seriously though…they’re worth checking out!

blog_teasinglydiverse

Amanda (previously went by Chere) at Teasingly Diverse. I’m trying to remember all the reasons I like her blog, but really, it boils down to the fact that she reminds me of me.  Does that make me vain?  I mean, we have a lot of the same interests and things!  Except for the Ducks…I prefer my sports team’s mascots to be inanimate objects.

blog_curiousillusion

Ari at Curious Illusion. She blogs about her obsession with her new iPhone and the cattiness of her new co-workers.

blog_canadianchalkboard

Ashley (I’m sensing an “A” theme!) at Canadian Chalkboard. She’s a real recent find, but I find her experience with the Canadian school system facinating.

blog_joyfortheseasons

Cheryl at Joy for the Seasons. She’s not new to blogging (though this one is new) nor is she new to me (I’ve known her since having her oldest in Sunday school 4 years ago).  But her blog is worth checking out, so she goes on this list!

Well, that’s enough for now.  What a recent blog you’ve discovered that worth checking out?
