FQF: Pretentious on a Plane

1.  Where do you like to sit on a plane?

First class!  Okay, they’ve only offered that to me once, when they cancelled my flight.  I was 17.  Yeah, they definitely don’t do that anymore, unless you’re a dignitary or something.

Seriously though, I like to sit as far front as possible (last on, first off).  I prefer seat “A”, the window on the left (when you are sitting down).  I’ve done a lot of experimenting, and I’ve determined that that’s the best seat for me to feel like I have room as my left side is not against some stranger (I’m left-handed).

I also have a trick of changing seats at the last minute.  I frequently fly without someone beside me by doing this!  I have the best of luck…if there is one empty seat on the plane, there’s about a 50% chance it’ll be next to me.

And no, I don’t think it’s because I smell.  Thanks for asking.

2.  What sound irritates you?

Tapping and buzzing noises.  I don’t like the sound of fans in bathrooms.  Any buzzing sound will set me on edge and I will be unable to concentrate on anything else.  And no, I haven’t always been like this (thankfully!), but it would be distracting while trying to concentrate in class the last few years I was in school.

3.  What’s something in your life that just isn’t colorful enough?

My car. Unfortunately, all my options really ran the spectrums of grey, so I went for more of a graphite.  I like my car, but it lacks the zest of my last car that was electric blue.  I’d also love to drive a purple car one day.

4.  What’s a film you were sure you would dislike but ended up liking?

Get Smart.   Saw it with the family when we were on vacation, and I thought it’d be super stupid.  Turned out to be quite funny.

5.  What kind of grades did you get in school?

All A’s until AP Calculus. (Wow, I realize how pretentious that sentence sounds.)  And then in college and seminary I had a good mix of As and Bs (and that one C in a freshman-level class in my major in my last semester), trying to get no more than 1 B a semester.

FQF: The Federal Government, Fires, and…Eminem?

1.  Would you ever consider working for the government?

Sure.  I mean, I do want to be a teacher in a public school.  But I also wouldn’t mind working in a bureaucratic position, though I’m sure some things would drive me batty.

2.  You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You get enough time to make ONE phone call. Who would you call?

At least I got to see Hawaii before I die, right?  Without question, I’d call my parents.  And not only because their number is one of the few that I actually have memorized, but also because they’re the obvious choice.  So please pick up, okay?

3.  If you had to wear one color every day for the rest of your life, which would you choose and why?

Blue, because I look good in it and enjoy all the shades.  If I had to pick a particular shade, I’d say periwinkle because it’s what I look best in and it’s my favorite.

4.  What is your dream for America’s future?

I dream that we’ll recognize that we’ve allowed our federal government to grow unconstitutionally large, and have it start pulling out of things such as education.  I dream that we’ll elect representives that recognize that like our own personal budgets, we have to cut spending in order to pay down debt.  But I’m afraid this is all a dream.

5.  What’s your favorite song of the moment?

I know this will be strange unless you’re familiar with my music tastes, but I’d have to say Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.”  I can’t relate to it (I promise I’m not nor have ever been in a violent co-dependent relationship), but for some reason it resonates.  Looking back at my favorite songs from the past, it’s clear I like the darker, from-the-soul type of songs.  Plus I’ve always been a fan of Eminem (or at least the cleaned-up versions of his songs).  Hope I don’t lose any favor in your eyes!

FQF: The Late Edition

1. Why is this Five Question Friday “late?”

This week has gotten away from me. I’m glad that it’s Friday, but just a little surprised.

2.  What bands/artists do your parents listen to that you hate? Like?

I think my mom does/has listened to Barry Manilow (sorry if I’m slandering your name, Mom!) which I can’t stand. I can’t think of any of my Dad’s favorites that I don’t like (though all of the 70s/80s stuff is a bit cheesy…side note, that’s one reason why I like Glee so much: they take cheesy yet good old songs and make them cheeseless…well, relatively). My Dad likes Journey and Queen and I really do, too. My Mom likes the Beach Boys, which are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

3.  If you could only see black and white except for one color, what color would you choose to see?

Blue. There are so many different shades, and all pretty.

4.  Can you do any voices or impressions and if yes, what ones?

I really hate when people do voices/impressions. So no, I’ve never tried.

5.  Does true altruism exist?

If true altruism exists, it is in what God does and has done for us. I don’t think that anything a sinful human being can be completely altruistic, as everything is tainted by our sinful desires and motives.

FQF: Injuries and Secret Weapons

1.  Is there anything pink within 10 feet of you?

Probably always is.  Currently my pink water bottle is at my finger tips, my desk calendar as pink on it, and my lunch bag has pink stripes on it.

2.  When is the last time you went to the mall?

Before tax season, in order to eat at the food court.  As far as actually shopping in the mall, who knows.

3.  When was the last time you drove out of town?

A few weeks ago I went with a friend to Richmond to visit her mom in the hospital.  The last time I drove was for April’s wedding in Georgia, the second weekend in January.  I don’t go on too many road trips (most places I want to go require a couple of planes).

4.  What’s the worst injury you’ve ever had?

Nothing too bad.  I did fall down a complete set of concrete stairs one time (carrying a big bag of laundry and wearing heels).  Ended up with some scrapes and a couple of deep bruises, one on my hip where the seatbelt on a plane hits you (I was flying to Turkey for the first time 2 days later).

5.  What is your secret weapon to lure in the opposite sex?

Ha, ha, ha!  Whatever it is, it certainly isn’t working.

Orange Awareness Day

As a public service to you, my dear readers, I am declaring today “Orange Awareness Day.”  It has come to my attention that the dubious color orange has taken a rank in the world that it doesn’t deserve.

Orange is not a pretty color.  Sure, it has a rightful place on the color wheel, but there is good reason that Sorry, Trouble, Candyland, and other reputable children games do not have orange game pieces.  The color simply does not belong in the hands of babes.

Orange is the color of construction signs for a good reason.  Orange construction barrels caution you to stay away.  Both construction and orange are best if avoided.

While there is nothing particularly objectionable about orange the fruit, you may notice that the part that is the most orange, the peel, is not eaten.  The concentration of orange simply makes it bitter and inedible.

I recently was encouraged to hear this very message in a young child who was playing with a toy that had the ill fortune of having some orange beads among it’s myriad of colors.  I asked her if we liked orange, and she properly responded, “No.”  I asked her what color we do like, and she respectfully listed the rest of the rainbow.  Attagirl.

Orange should not be the color of toys, pens, beds, jewelry, cars, or shoes.

Most of all, orange should never be the color of football jerseys.

Please forward this message to any Clemson Tiger, Oklahoma State Cowboy, Florida Gator, or texas longhorn fan you may know.  It is the time for new beginnings.

And one last thing…

Boomer Sooner!

I Heart Purple

I go through color phases. The first phase I remember going through was pink. I, like most young girls, loved pink. When I reached 7 years old, I had a sudden hatred for pink. Then, I like lavender. Everything had to be lavender or purple, including my new room.
By the time I hit middle school, I had enough with the purple. Blue was the new favorite color, particularly periwinkle (a cross between lavender and light blue). When we redecorated my room, this color was painted on the walls; oh, was it beautiful!
As I became an adult, I still liked periwinkle, but I got kind of tired of it for awhile. I went through sky blue, pink again, green, and now it seems like I’m back to purple.

The funny thing about my color phases is that it greatly affects what color of clothes I buy. When I’m in a certain phase, I am much more inclined to buy certain colors. That is why right now my room is decorated in pink, my wardrobe leans a little to the green side, but when I buy something new, it tends to be purple or lavender.
Do you go through phases, or is your favorite color your always favorite color?

Yes, I Am Really That Weird

You know what’s one of the best things in the blogging world? Being talked about by other people. This might not be true in real life, but it certainly is in this alternate world!

Debra at Reflecting tagged me in a “7 Random/Weird things” meme. It’s exactly what my readers need to know about me: yes, I am really that weird!

Rules:
1. Link to the person that tagged you and post the rules on your blog.
2. Share seven random or weird things about yourself.
3. Tag seven random people at the end of your post and include links to their blogs.
4. Let each person know that they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Seven random/weird things about me:

1. I only eat crackers in groups of 4. If there are less than that in the box, I’ll leave them for someone else.

2. I don’t like round tables. I was just thinking about this today when I went to Panera for lunch and they had no square tables except for booths. I felt bad about taking a booth for just me, but I couldn’t bring myself to sit at a round table.

3. I’ve been to two countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea (Spain and Turkey…twice) without ever seeing it. It’s one of my biggest travel goals. There’s lots of places I want to go though, so I don’t know that it will be next.

4. I love to do homework. Sadly, this doesn’t include writing papers, which is all I have left for the semesters. How much would you want me to pay you to write my paper on Ephesians? Totally kidding, don’t report me! I plan on going home tonight and writing a third of it.

5. I’m a city girl, but have almost always lived within a mile of open country. The exception was the dorm in college, which is probably 3-4 miles from the country. Right now, there are woods right outside my bedroom window that people like to hunt in. It can get really loud.

6. I prefer to read a classic than the latest smash hit. One reason for this is I like to be the first to read/know something, not the last. Also, I prefer to read smut-free, and (most) classics are much cleaner. They have been read for hundreds of years for a reason; the writing quality is very high.

7. Pink is not my favorite color, but it is the color of everything in my bedroom. My room is pink because I had a pink comforter from my dorm days with Dana (our room was in the very hot colors of lime green and hot pink, and our walls were a very fun shade of blue), and I was too thrifty to buy a new one when I moved. I went to Ross and bought the rest of my decorations for super cheap to have things that match. I plan on redecorating if I scrounge up the money when (if) I move in May.

That was surprisingly easy. I’m not sure that these were the oddest things about me, but they were what came to mind at the time. If you know me, feel free to point out any of my other idiosyncracies in a comment, as long as it is with love!

I’ll be tagging:

I look forward to seeing what you have to say!

What’s a Single Girl to Do?

I love Valentine’s Day. It’s all pink, and chock-full of cards, and flowery, and overflowing in chocolate, and packed with hearts, and just plain girly. Sure, I’m single. But that doesn’t mean I can’t be a full-fledged participant in this holiday!
For the last several years, I have made it a plan to send valentines to my single friends. I know that there are many who find this day entirely depressing and it heightens their longing for a man to show them love. I’m so glad that that’s not what being single is all about!
I’m not saying that every single girl should look forward to this day as much as I do, but it is a special opportunity to reflect on the greatest love gift we’ve ever received: new life through Jesus’ work on the cross.
May God show you anew His love for you! Happy Valentine’s Day!
