Like Me, Will Ya?

Welcome to the Ignorant Historian! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

I haven’t really talked about it in a while, but I’m still working on getting  my novel ready to go. Part of that, is putting myself out there as an author.

I still have a hard time considering myself an author.

Anyway, to start myself along that journey, I’ve created a Facebook page for my authory self. If you’re of a mind to, will you “like” me? You can see my page, here, or do a search for “Ronnica Z. Rothe, author.”

Ha, that sounds so official.

Out of Oblivion: Facebook Takeover

According to Facebook:

1.3% of Southeastern Baptist reads The Bible.

I’m thinking that number is slightly off. I hope.

I think facebook is taking over the world. Don’t get me wrong, I like facebook, and it helps me keep in contact with my friends all over. Yesterday on the news there was a story about a tragedy involving two UNC students. The pictures they had of them were off their facebook profiles (properly cited). Who would have thought that facebook would have become a reliable news source?

This weekend was so relaxing! I watched movies, read, and studied a little. I still have quite a bit of studying to do for my tests tomorrow, but I’m much more in a studious mood this morning than I was even last night. Maybe I’ll continue the semester’s work after all.

Three more days of class and then it’s spring break! It’s not as exciting without Glorieta, that’s for sure. I’ll just be staying around here, working, and catching up on school work. That works for me. The real break comes the next week when Miss Dana will be here! Yay for visitors!

Oh, Technology

This holiday weekend has been a mostly unfrusterating carnival of technological mishaps for me.  Or maybe now that it’s over, I’m forgetting the frusteration I felt Saturday afternoon.

First, my headphones that I use to watch House on my laptop (I actually prefer that because it has better sound/picture than my TV) and listen to pump-it-up music on my phone stopped working.  Okay, it was still half working: the left half.  What can I say, left is better!

Then, the biggest issue happened Saturday.  While I was cleaning my room and my laptop was supposed to be minding it’s own business, it decided to get freaky on me.  It’s only 9 months old (a mere baby…okay, child), but for whatever reason no matter how many different fixes I tried, it would not get past a certain point in the start up.  Every type of system restore I attempted wouldn’t work because there was something wrong with the disc (really? hadn’t noticed) and needed to run the Scan Disc thing.  Of course, that would require it to fully start up…

I consider myself decently handy when it comes to computer things, but this was beyond my skill set…at least my old skill set.  I ended up having to reinstall Windows on my lappy and all the rest of the programs.  I’m very thankful that I didn’t really have plans this weekend, so I had time to get it back in working order!

The last technological mishap comes from Facebook.  For whatever reason, all the updates are stuck at Saturday afternoon.  Of course, that means that it’s full of “I’m so excited for the game!” and “Boomer Sooner!”  Like rubbing salt in the wound…

Seriously though, this weekend has been relaxing, with double the alone time and doing pittly things time.  I’m very thankful for these types of weekends, especially when they fall between two very busy weeks!  I hope you had a wonderful weekend as well!

Paranoia and Faux Pas

You know those AT&T commericals with the 5 bars in the background of pretty much every shot?  Then there were those Budweiser commercials for a while where you would see the crown on different things?  Coca-cola has a similar commercial where the main character (can you have a main character in a commercial?) sees Coke bottles everywhere until he gets that refreshing taste.  Every time I see that commercial (I’ve been watching a lot of basketball), I crave a Diet Dr. Pepper.  Probably not their intent.  ANYWAY, this is very un-subliminal subliminal messaging.  I don’t trust advertising anyway, but these types of commercials just brings out the paranoia in me…what’s in commercials that is intended to manipulate us that we DON’T notice?

Are you a Facebooker?  You know the new format that everyone seems to despise?  Well, it’s really a friend of newbies, because now you can’t do the faux pas of writing on your own wall.  Or really, you do that every time you update your status.  I do miss the days when the wall was seperate…and there were no applications.

Okay, obviously those two things have nothing to do with each other…it’s just a glimse at what I think about.

My Teenagers Will Never…

When I have teenaged children, I’m going to teach them how to use proper spelling and grammar in online communication, and if they don’t, they’re going to have to do work to prove to me they know it (e.g. write the usages of your and you’re 20x each). I don’t care if they use texting shorthand or whatever, but if they’re writing a real word IT WILL BE SPELLED CORRECTLY.

That is all.

ETA: Oh, wow.  Yes, I did have a weird typing error in this post that is now fixed, the kind where I think faster than I type.  I wrote it in a hurry; that’s what I get.  Oh, the irony…

Facebook Can Be Funny

Have you heard that the Facebook guy, Mark Zuckerberg, is worth $1.5 billion at the ripe old age of 23? There’s a reason for it. Facebook is one of the few Internet sites that is able to specifically target marketing. If you want to run an ad, you can ask that it be run specifically for females between the age of 25-30 that like reading and are located in the Raleigh area, for example. Since you fill out your interests, age, gender, location, relationship status, etc. on your profile, these ads can be strategically placed in the viewing of prospective clients.

That’s what worries me about the ads that I get. They seem to have me pegged (mostly). I get a lot of advertisements for dating sites (one was even specifically targeted for people 25 and up!) and travel opportunities. Other ads, well, I just don’t know about.

Here are a few:

“Cause of belly fat” with a picture of man’s six-pack. Even if I were to say, want to lose some of my belly fat, I don’t want my stomach to look like THAT. I get lots of more targeted ads for weight loss (one I saw today said simply, “You fat?”) which makes me wonder, has Facebook figured out my BMI based on the pictures I have on there? I’d really rather not know!

“Bald hair creme” with a picture of the top of a bald man’s head. Um, I’m not a man, and I have plenty of hair. Shouldn’t this ad have been targeted to someone else?

I get the same “Meet 5 guys” ad that I talked about before, but I actually got one that had pictures on it…of FOUR guys. Is the fifth supposed guy so anxious to meet me too ugly to include his picture?

On the dating topic, one of the more pointed ads advertised “find your husband.” I wish it were that easy!

One I got this morning was just strange. It was for Jansport, the backpack company: “Wherever you go please take us with you.” Nope, I like my old backpack of a competitive brand just fine don’t travel without it. If I brought you along too you’d probably just get in a fight when I wasn’t looking. Plus I’d have to carry one on the front, which would just be suspicious as I go through security.

Another totally random ad was for Philadelphia real estate. I live in North Carolina, why would I buy a house in Philadelphia?

What funny ads have you seen online?

Woo Me

You know, I AM single, and from time to time I wish that I wasn’t.  However, when I saw an advertisement on facebook promising I’d meet, “5 guys in 5 minutes,” that just makes me cringe. Sure, I wouldn’t mind a man in my life, but what would I do with 5? By the way, the name of the website was “Woo Me.” How romantic.

Seriously though, I’m fine with waiting on God, knowing that if He desires, He can bring someone into my life. Sometimes this is a struggle, but other times it’s easy. Having good friends who are also single helps a lot, but I know that someday they may all go off and get married. If that happens, I’ll be happy for them and will enjoy watching their families grow!

There’s lots of things I enjoy about being single. I like being in control of my time and diet. I love having roommates that encourage me and laugh with me (a lot). I enjoy spending time in the homes of others watching their kids…and being able to leave them there at the end of the night.

Are you single? Be encouraged. You are NOT alone. If you are His child, He is always with you (Psalm 23). Reach out to those who are around you and seek to serve them. Because you can dictate your own schedule and may live alone means that you are probably more able to take opportunities to serve others. At the same time, it can be easy to ignore them, so it will take some effort on your part. (1 Corinthians 7:32-34)

If you are married, do you know someone who is single in your church? Invite them to dinner, write them a note, or do something else nice. It can be hard, especially in churches as they are so family-oriented. Include them in regular activities, and adopt them as a part of your family for church functions.
If you haven’t taken the opportunity yet, please let me know how my new blog looks. Constructive criticism is welcome! I want it to be reader-friendly, so I have to hear from the, um, readers.
