FQF: Playing Games

1.  How often have you returned book to the library unread?

Fairly frequently, probably 1 in 3 or 4 books that I return. It’s not my intent, but if I lose interest or I haven’t gotten to the book before it’s requested by someone else or it’s reached the end of its renewals (umm, after 6 months!), I’ll take it back.

2.  What are your favorite games to play?

I like card games like Nerts and Euchre and party games like ImaginIff and Apples to Apples.

3.  How do you feel about arranged marriages?

I would do it if it was based on his character, not what he could bring to the family. Though I am glad to have the chance to pick my own husband.

4.  Which do you prefer: the original Star Wars trilogy, or the new one?

I actually like Episodes I-III (the newer ones) better.  I love all the foreshadowing.  Perhaps if I had gone to the original ones in the theater (the first time they came out…I saw them when they did the updated ones in the 90s) they would be more special to me.

5.  When did you learn to swim?

I think I was a bit older, but you’d have to ask my mom. I remember taking swim lessons after we moved to our new house when I was in 2nd grade, so it was probably when I was 8 or so when I officially learned.  It’s still one of my favorite things to do.

Make sure you come by Monday…I have something that I can’t wait to share with you all!

FQF: The Gift Giving Edition

1.  What do you want for your birthday? (December 15, hint, hint)

On the top of my wish list is a Barnes & Noble Nook (not the new color screen one, but the traditional kind).  Which should come as no surprise if you’ve read about my book-packing woes on Twitter.  When I wrote out my birthday/Christmas list this year, I realized that I really am grown up, as I was asking for things like cloth napkins.

2.  What was your favorite gift that you’ve received?

Though it wasn’t for my birthday or Christmas, I’d have to say my car.  When I graduated from college, my parents did what they always said they wouldn’t: they bought me a car.  A great gift and I chose well, as my Camry has had no more than cosmetic issues caused by the rough streets (a rock to the windshield, a drunk driver to the side, and a nail to the tire).

3.  What was the strangest gift you’ve ever received?

A pack of plain white copy paper.  I received this as a gift from my (younger) brother when I was in elementary school.  I had wanted paper, but I wanted colored printing paper.  Still makes me laugh.

4.  What was your favorite gift to give?

I think it’d probably be the scrapbooks I made for some friends from college the Christmas after I left OU.  I love to give gifts more than receive them, so I can’t say that there were any gifts that I didn’t like giving, but some are more meaningful than others.

5.  Are you done shopping for Christmas?

Yes.  Though I still need to mail presents to a friend and her girl.  Other than that, I’m done.  I will wrap my family’s gifts once I get to Kansas (I had them shipped direct from Amazon).

FQF: Gifts, Wind, and Socks

1.  If you had to purchase all your friends’ gifts at one store for the rest of your life, which would you choose?

Does Amazon count? Because that’s pretty much where I buy the bulk of my gifts. If I had to pick a brick and mortar store, I guess I’d choose Target…at least it’s my favorite place to buy stuff for myself.

2.  What is more difficult for you: looking into someone’s eyes when you are telling someone how you feel, or looking into someone’s eyes when they are telling you how they feel?

Looking into someone’s eyes when they’re talking to me. Because I don’t know what they’re going to say, but I (usually) know what I’m going to say to someone else.

3. Not counting in the midst of a storm, where’s the windiest place you’ve been?

Definitely where I grew up: Wichita, Kansas.  It’s pretty much always windy there, and is like the 7th windiest city in the United States.  I remember watching outdoor scenes in movies growing up and thinking how fake they were because they wouldn’t have wind.  I didn’t realize that in many places, wind is abnormal and not an everyday thing.

Now, any time it’s windy, it reminds me of home.

4.  In what way is today better than yesterday?

I’m wearing socks that match my outfit. Yesterday I accidentally wore white socks with brown pants and shoes, and it bugged me all day.

5.  Have your reading habits changed since starting a blog?

Yes, but probably not because I blog, but because I’ve graduated and all that.  Though reading book blogs has made my TBR list huge.

FQF: Slumber Party Edition

Tonight I’m co-hosting a sleepover for the 5th and 6th grade girls at the church.  Should be fun!  Here’s some related questions…

1.  What memory stands out from 5th grade?

When my mom subbed for my class.  I was often quiet in class, but I was especially quiet that day.  Don’t think she’s seen me that quiet either before that or since.

2.  What memory stand out from 6th grade?

Teasing a girl in our class (that had previously been her friend) and defacing a picture of hers.  We were totally mean, and I have no idea why.  I joined in, and for that, I was definitely guilty.  These were rough years for me in that respect, which is why I love to work with girls that age now.

3.  What was your favorite slumber party activity?

Besides gossiping about boys?  Painting our nails.  Actually, we could do them both together.  We would use dry erase boards to write out lists of boys, or write “I love Tommy” and to play M*A*S*H.  Other than the possibility of painting nails, none of that will be happening tonight.

4.  What was your favorite color to paint your nails?

I can’t remember what it was called, but it was some blueish-purpleish color, I think.  I can’t quite picture it either, but I remember almost using up the entire bottle.  Also popular was painting one part of the nail one color and another a complimentary color.

5.  What is your worst slumber party memory?

I remember staying up ALL NIGHT for my 11th birthday with one of the other girls there.  Not a good idea–about 10 AM the next day I crashed and ended up sick.  That won’t be happening either, moms, if you’re reading this.

FQF: Halloween-Themed Questions

1.  What was your favorite Halloween costume?

I remember really liking being Rapunzel in 3rd grade, with my hair of yarn.  Mom actually made all my costumes growing up, and I always loved that.

2.  What’s your favorite candy?

Snickers.  I don’t feel bad digging through a child’s candy stash for a Snickers (or two, or…).

3.  What are you dressing up as this year?

I don’t dress up for Halloween, and haven’t in a very long time.  I’m actually not a big fan of costumes.  If I had to, though?  I think I’d go all-out princess.  Lame, I know, but who doesn’t want to be a princess?

4.  What are your Halloween plans?

I’m helping with my church’s Party on the Block Saturday evening.  I’m glad that we’re not doing it on Halloween this year, because I’ve not given out candy on Halloween since I’ve lived here, but I get to do that this year.  I imagine there will be quite a few kids coming by, since there are a lot of townhouses in a very short amount of space…an easy target for optimum candy acquisition.

5.  Do you like haunted houses?

That’s a big fat no.  Actually, I don’t like being scared in any capacity.  If a friend scares me, it only happens once before they realize how serious I am when I say not to scare me.

FQF: Food and Hammer

1.  What food did you used to dislike but now enjoy?

Just the other day a friend made me pizza that I used to hate–I disliked all veggies on pizza. This pizza had spinach, tomato, feta, chicken, and the like on it…and I loved it. I’ve been more and more adventurous with food, and for the most part, I’ve been liking what I eat.

2.  Where is your hammer, and what did you last use it for?

In my closet. I used it to hang up some pictures, when I moved.

3.  What are your ideal working conditions?

When I hear that term, “working conditions,” I think of The Jungle. Glad I’ve never had to work under conditions even 10% that bad.

If I had my way, I’d work in a warm office (check) with a window. Lamps (check) instead of florescent lights. In my pajamas. With a Diet Dr Pepper tap. So yeah, my “working conditions” aren’t perfect, but they’re pretty close!

4.  When did you most recently have ice cream?

I plead the 5th. I am Game On! Okay, Tuesday.

5.  How do you feel about giving bad/negative reviews on books?

I don’t enjoy it, but I do it as necessary. I prefer NOT to review a book I didn’t like, unless I feel like I need to dissuade others or make a point about the book.

FQF: All Books, All the Time

In honor of tomorrow’s Read-a-thon, this week’s five questions will all be reading related!

1.  What bad habit do you have when it comes to books?

I read while eating which often results in crumbs and stains in my books.  I try not to really, but if I can’t keep from dropping something on my shirt, how do you expect me to keep from dropping something on a book?

2. If you could read in a foreign language, which language would you chose?

I love Spanish, but it takes me forever to read something in Spanish, and I only have about 30% comprehension (if that!). Still, I think I’d want to be able to read in Russian.  Dostoevsky and Tolstoy are a couple of my favorite authors, and I’d love to read them in the original!

3. Name a book that you could/would not finish.

A recent one is The Passage by Justin Cronin.  I read about 150 pages before I had to put it down.  It’s not that it wasn’t interesting, it’s just that I was scared of wasting my time.  I had just finished Under the Dome which I strongly disliked and I thought should have been half its length.  And on the back of The Passage–a long book itself–is an endorsement from King himself.  I’m also not one for vampires or anything else of the sort, so I thought that when I finally got to that part, I would hate it.  So I did a preemptive strike and put it down.

4. Do you ever dog-ear books?

I exercised poor judgment in college and did a few times.  I’m not proud of those days.  Since then, I’ve repented and changed my ways.

5. How many books do you usually have checked out of the library at any given time?

I currently have 34 books out, which is probably the most I’ve ever had out at one time.  I usually have 15-20 books out, though.  I need to cut back, because some of these books I’ve had out for months!

FQF: Freedom and Growth

1.  What is your favorite Bill of Rights right?

Freedom of religion.  Though I’m quite fond of the whole of the first amendment…thankful that I can believe what I believe, practice what I practice, and share it with others.

2.  If you could host a Reality TV show, which one would it be?

The Amazing Race would be cool because it’d be fun to go all the places they go without the stress of the race.  Plus, with all that traveling would come a lot of time to read! (Now the real reason I like to travel comes out…)

3. How would you describe your taste in the opposite sex?

Besides the obvious (that I’m looking for godly, single man), I’d definitely say I’m attracted to the nerdier type and guys that can make me laugh.  I want to be able to have intelligent discussions AND have fun.  I’m not picky physically, though I do tend to be intimidated by taller men.

4. What is your policy on book lending?

I love to do it.  While I’d like to say that I’ve gotten back every book I’ve lent, that’s not the case.  But I’ve been blessed with books, and if they’re good, I want to share!  If it’s not good, then I won’t even keep them.

5. In what way are you better than you were six months ago?

I’m stronger, I know.  I can swim longer than I have in years and faster than I ever have.  (The other day I was the fastest one in the pool, though that’s not saying much…there were only 5 others there, all older than me.)  I hope I’m godlier as well, but I feel like I have further to go than ever.

FQF: Pretentious on a Plane

1.  Where do you like to sit on a plane?

First class!  Okay, they’ve only offered that to me once, when they cancelled my flight.  I was 17.  Yeah, they definitely don’t do that anymore, unless you’re a dignitary or something.

Seriously though, I like to sit as far front as possible (last on, first off).  I prefer seat “A”, the window on the left (when you are sitting down).  I’ve done a lot of experimenting, and I’ve determined that that’s the best seat for me to feel like I have room as my left side is not against some stranger (I’m left-handed).

I also have a trick of changing seats at the last minute.  I frequently fly without someone beside me by doing this!  I have the best of luck…if there is one empty seat on the plane, there’s about a 50% chance it’ll be next to me.

And no, I don’t think it’s because I smell.  Thanks for asking.

2.  What sound irritates you?

Tapping and buzzing noises.  I don’t like the sound of fans in bathrooms.  Any buzzing sound will set me on edge and I will be unable to concentrate on anything else.  And no, I haven’t always been like this (thankfully!), but it would be distracting while trying to concentrate in class the last few years I was in school.

3.  What’s something in your life that just isn’t colorful enough?

My car. Unfortunately, all my options really ran the spectrums of grey, so I went for more of a graphite.  I like my car, but it lacks the zest of my last car that was electric blue.  I’d also love to drive a purple car one day.

4.  What’s a film you were sure you would dislike but ended up liking?

Get Smart.   Saw it with the family when we were on vacation, and I thought it’d be super stupid.  Turned out to be quite funny.

5.  What kind of grades did you get in school?

All A’s until AP Calculus. (Wow, I realize how pretentious that sentence sounds.)  And then in college and seminary I had a good mix of As and Bs (and that one C in a freshman-level class in my major in my last semester), trying to get no more than 1 B a semester.

FQF: The Federal Government, Fires, and…Eminem?

1.  Would you ever consider working for the government?

Sure.  I mean, I do want to be a teacher in a public school.  But I also wouldn’t mind working in a bureaucratic position, though I’m sure some things would drive me batty.

2.  You are on a flight from Honolulu to Chicago non-stop. There is a fire in the back of the plane. You get enough time to make ONE phone call. Who would you call?

At least I got to see Hawaii before I die, right?  Without question, I’d call my parents.  And not only because their number is one of the few that I actually have memorized, but also because they’re the obvious choice.  So please pick up, okay?

3.  If you had to wear one color every day for the rest of your life, which would you choose and why?

Blue, because I look good in it and enjoy all the shades.  If I had to pick a particular shade, I’d say periwinkle because it’s what I look best in and it’s my favorite.

4.  What is your dream for America’s future?

I dream that we’ll recognize that we’ve allowed our federal government to grow unconstitutionally large, and have it start pulling out of things such as education.  I dream that we’ll elect representives that recognize that like our own personal budgets, we have to cut spending in order to pay down debt.  But I’m afraid this is all a dream.

5.  What’s your favorite song of the moment?

I know this will be strange unless you’re familiar with my music tastes, but I’d have to say Eminem and Rihanna’s “Love the Way You Lie.”  I can’t relate to it (I promise I’m not nor have ever been in a violent co-dependent relationship), but for some reason it resonates.  Looking back at my favorite songs from the past, it’s clear I like the darker, from-the-soul type of songs.  Plus I’ve always been a fan of Eminem (or at least the cleaned-up versions of his songs).  Hope I don’t lose any favor in your eyes!
