FQF

1.  What’s your favorite holiday?

Christmas.  Followed closely by Easter and Valentine’s Day (yes, single girls can love Valentine’s Day).

2.  Least favorite?

Halloween, by far.  I’m also rather ambivalent towards the summer holidays.  And Groundhog’s Day…could care less. ;)

3. What’s your favorite not-for-profit?

Excluding the obviously fab one that I work for and my church, I’d say our local food bank.

4. What’s the happiest political moment of your life?

Perhaps when Mike Huckabee was doing well in many of the primaries and caucuses in 2008.

5.  What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?

I’d become a full-time blogger.  I’d love for my job to be to learn about and comment on cultural, political, and spiritual issues.  But since I’ll never allow advertising on my site, the only way this would happen is if a company paid me to blog for them.  And even then it’d have to be the just-right opportunity.

FQF: The Late Edition

1. Why is this Five Question Friday “late?”

This week has gotten away from me. I’m glad that it’s Friday, but just a little surprised.

2.  What bands/artists do your parents listen to that you hate? Like?

I think my mom does/has listened to Barry Manilow (sorry if I’m slandering your name, Mom!) which I can’t stand. I can’t think of any of my Dad’s favorites that I don’t like (though all of the 70s/80s stuff is a bit cheesy…side note, that’s one reason why I like Glee so much: they take cheesy yet good old songs and make them cheeseless…well, relatively). My Dad likes Journey and Queen and I really do, too. My Mom likes the Beach Boys, which are definitely a guilty pleasure of mine.

3.  If you could only see black and white except for one color, what color would you choose to see?

Blue. There are so many different shades, and all pretty.

4.  Can you do any voices or impressions and if yes, what ones?

I really hate when people do voices/impressions. So no, I’ve never tried.

5.  Does true altruism exist?

If true altruism exists, it is in what God does and has done for us. I don’t think that anything a sinful human being can be completely altruistic, as everything is tainted by our sinful desires and motives.

FQF: How is it Friday Already?

1.  Should juveniles be tried as adults if they commit murder?

This is SUCH a hard question. I think in almost all cases, youths know that murder is very wrong. But do they always recognize the consequences of their actions (I’m not talking about the punishment, but the finality of death and the impact that has on others)? No. I suppose it would depend on the situation. I don’t like the idea of minors serving time in adult prisons, nor do I think that they should merely be released when they are 18 or 21.

2.  Would you rather teach a young child to read or have to learn again for yourself?

I would NOT like to learn how to read again, since it’s harder for adults. Plus, that would mean I couldn’t read while I was re-learning. I would like to teach a child to read…I LOVE to teach and want to share the world of books to children.

3.  Name 1 thing you love about being an adult:

Driving (and the freedom associated with it).

4.  If you had been named according to your personality what would your name be?

Lola Vavoom (JUST KIDDING…that’s a minor character’s name in Jasper Fforde’s Thursday Next series).   I’ve always thought that Rebecca would have fit me (a name my parents had considered). When I was little I always thought Naomi Ruth Russell would be an awesome nom de plume (no, I wouldn’t have used the French back then, but I like to now!), but I definitely don’t think so now.  I also relate a lot to Hannah in the Bible, so that’s another option. Though really, Ronnica sums me up quite well.

5.  What texture irritates you?

Velvet.

FQF: Moving Themed

1.  What are you dreading?

Hauling boxes up the stairs (my bedroom’s on the 2nd floor).

2.  How many times have you moved?

My family moved twice while I was growing up (the first time was too early for me to remember).  In college, I moved 9 times from one temporary place to another.  Since then, I’ve moved 4 times (this weekend will be my 5th).  I’m hoping my next move will be into somewhere more permanent.

3.  How many roommates have you had?

10 plus 7.  10 “permanent” roommates and 7 others short-term (4-8 weeks).  And then now Jen.  All were good experiences except the first which was mutually displeasing (culminating in her moving out before Halloween).

4.  Where was your favorite place to live?

I think the apartment that I’m leaving.  There have been awesome roommates past, present, and future, but the apartment itself was my favorite.  I had a large bedroom with a reading chair for the first time.  I had a bathroom of my own for the first time, that was also connected to the room.  It was a quite complex in a good location.  Great neighbors.  Yes, I’ll miss it.

5.  How would you describe your decorating style?

I’ve often made my choices based on what’s easy and definitely based on what’s cheap.  I don’t like clutter, including knick knacks.  Actually, I plan to have very little decorating my new room.  I’ll have curtains, a pretty comforter, and my flower pictures.  I have altered my flower collection to include a couple that have deeper meaning (they remind me of Kansas, NC, or family).  Will show those when I get them all figured out.

As far as colors, I love brighter colors (except red and orange, obv) and pastels.  Periwinkle and lilac never leave my favorite decorating colors (though neither will be featured in my new room, interestingly).  Brown’s a favorite as well.

FQF: Childish Addictions

1.  Are there any animals you refuse to touch?

I’ll touch anything, assuming a trainer is holding it, blah, blah, blah.  But will I hold any animals? Not really (the occasional small dog or cat, sure).

2.  Would you like to know the precise date of your future death?

Yes, I would.  But as soon as you told me, I wouldn’t.  The building anticipation in the years, months, and weeks before that date would be awful.

3.  What is made for kids but you love it anyway?

Lip Smacker lip gloss.  Hopelessly addicted to them.  Go through a “party pack” every couple of months.

4.  Ever been addicted to a video/computer game? Which one(s)?

Only once.  Sims 2, senior year of college.  After playing it more and more over a couple of months at the end of my first semester, I realized I had to give it up.  Thankfully, it was a friend’s game on her computer, so I didn’t have easy access to it.  I think I really liked it because I got to control a world.  It was basically the techie version of what I did as a child: make up names, ages, traits, etc of my many imaginary children.

5.  __ is life. The rest is just details. Fill in the blank.

Jesus.

FQF: Hermitess, Freedoms, and Cheese

1.  Ever think about moving to Alaska to live as a hermit?

If I moved somewhere to be a hermit, it most certainly wouldn’t be Alaska. Arizona, probably.

2.  For all the freedoms that people in the United States enjoy what are some of the ways that these people oppress themselves willingly and why?

Well, I mentioned a big one yesterday. Anything else that you can think of?

3.  When was the last time you were up all night?

When I was traveling to Turkey, I think.

4.  How would you like to die?

Besides the cliché “in my sleep,” I’d go for anything instantaneous.

5.  Finish the words:

Ch: cheese
An: Anglican
Ge: geek
So: social
Ne: next
Bo: boo (though I accidentally typed it “book”)
Wi: William
E: empty

In for a Bumpy Ride

1. What is your favorite sport?

To watch: football.  To play: tennis (and about the only sport I’d play).

2. Which day of the week do you look forward to most?

During tax season, it was Tuesdays (my late start day).  Now, I’m not sure.  I actually prefer the structure of weekdays to the weekend (I know, weird), so maybe Mondays?  I do spend time with 2 of my favorite people every other Monday, so that’d make sense.

3. Have you ever had a secret admirer?

If it’s a secret, how would I know?  But not that I know of, no.

4. Do you like your eggs scrambled or sunny side up?

Scrambled (or hard-boiled).  Once tried sunny side up because it looked good, but I was VERY mistaken.  If I make them myself, I like to add cheddar cheese and ranch dressing…yum!

5. What was the first plane ride you took?

To Chicago, when I was 16.  It was for Science Olympiad, when we were going to Nationals for my first time.  We actually waited around in the small Wichita airport for 7 hours (this was pre-9/11) because they kept delaying our flight and then switched us.  It was quite bumpy, too, since there were a lot of storms, but I didn’t know better at the time.  Now, turbulence bothers me more than I’d like to admit (though I’m a big roller coaster junkie–go figure).  And though I got started flying late, I’ve not stopped, and now routinely fly 4 times a year.

Summer To-Do and a Million Dollar Question

1. What’s on your “to do” list this summer?

Moving, for one thing (and the accompanying ”getting settled”).  I don’t really have “summer” plans other than that, since I don’t segment my life so much like this anymore.  I’d like to get back in to regular exercise and eating at home, but I’m already starting to work on that.

2.  Do you enjoy sleeping late?

Most definitely.  Though “late” has changed from what it was when I was a teenager or a college student.  9 AM is the latest I ever want to sleep in

3. Fill in the blank: Life is __________.

A beautiful, wonderful, sometimes painful gift.

4. What is in your refrigerator right now?

As of writing this (April 23rd), a few condiments (mainly salad dressings), milk, eggs, onion, tortillas, lots of cheese (don’t ever want to run out), and some leftovers (taco soup and breakfast casserole).  I think that’s all that’s mine.  Haven’t done my weekly shopping yet to get fruits and veggies.

5. If you received $1 million (after taxes), what would you do with the money?

Pay off my student loan, buy a medium-sized house and furnish it modestly, and give some to friends.  Give at least 200K of it to my church, and then invest the rest.

Regrets, Music and Friends

Do you like rainy days or snowy winter days more?

Snowy days if I get to stay indoors.  If I have to be out in it, I like the rain.  Actually, being out in the rain often makes me laugh-out-loud happy; I don’t know why.

Tell me about something you really regret?

Joining the masses in being mean to classmates in middle school.  I don’t even think it occurred to me that the rumors I heard and spread probably weren’t true.

Tell me about your favorite music?

My favorite singer is Collin Raye as I love his voice.  My favorite band is Maroon 5 (I’m surprised my copy of “Songs about Jane” still works), though I wish their lyrics on their latest CD were cleaner.  I love the goofy play-on-words lyrics to Barenaked Ladies’ songs.  I tend to like pop-y stuff and have a recent obsession with the music of Disney stars Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato.  My favorite worship music is Sovereign Grace’s “Sons and Daughters” CD.

What is something or someone you miss the most from childhood?

Being a part of a close family…doing things together and having people around to talk to.  Not that I don’t love my independence now, but I miss that.

Are you the kind of person that you would want to have as a friend?

Absolutely not.  I tend not to like people like myself (and they tend not to like me).  We can be acquaintances, but will likely never be good friends.

That Last One’s a Thinker

1.  How do you eat an Oreo?

I pull it apart, and eat the cookie with the least amount of icing on it first.  Then I lick off the icing, and eat the other cookie.  And repeat, of course.

2.  What turns you off about the opposite sex?

Unteachableness.  I don’t like a guy who always thinks he’s right and has nothing to learn. (And yes, I tend to be a bit like this, which is probably why it bugs me so much.)

3.  Do you scrunch or fold your toilet paper?

Definitely fold.

4.  How many kids do you want to have?

8.  Okay, I always say that, just to see the look on the other person’s face.  Seriously though, I would like to have a large family.  That said, I DON’T plan on birthing many of those 8 (or you know, 5 or 6).  I want to adopt (possibly older children or a sibling set) and am excited to see so many families in our church getting excited about it as well.

5.  Do they bury people with their braces on?

I sure hope so.  It seems like a waste to take the time to get them off just for a little scrap medal.  Or are you thinking they’ll reuse them?  Ick!
