Landing in Enemy Territory

I never get the paper, but last Sunday I did, to get some coupons that were in it. I didn’t take the time to read the paper (except for the Comics, can’t skip those!), but something caught my eye:

Aerial Delivery Goes Awry

It seems that UNC wanted to kick off the season by having parachute jumpers land in the stadium with the game ball. Due to bad weather, miscommunication, and poor judgment, the parachute jumpers were dropped off at the wrong stadium.

The stadium of UNC’s big rival, Duke. I’ve been trying to make a spiritual analogy out of this, but really, this is just a funny story in and of itself.

I laugh because the story says that the jumpers knew “only when they landed in [Duke's stadium] that they were in the wrong place.” Their slow descent into the stadium, where they could see the fans decked in the team colors, apparently didn’t give it away because there were few/no fans there an hour before their game. The ACC just doesn’t do football like other, Bigger (ahem) conferences.

Have a wonderful, restful, worshipful, and re-energizing Sunday!

Thirteen Things to Do Before I Die

Thirteen Things to Do Before I Die

1. Visit every inhabited continent (still need Africa, South America, and Australia).

2. Read every book written by Jane Austen, Charles Dickens, and Leo Tolstoy (I’m only close on Jane Austen).

3. Grow my own garden (I’d want cucumbers, bell peppers, and radishes, just like we had growing up).

4. Memorize at least 4 books of the Bible.

5. Write a book.

6. Be a positive influence on the next generation.

7. Celebrate Dana and I turning 40 with a huge party (you’re all invited…summer 2022).

8. Meet the president (whoever is in office at the time, whether I like them or not).

9. Go on a cruise.

10. See my favorite Shakespeare and Oscar Wilde plays performed in person (Hamlet, Macbeth, Othello; The Importance of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband…I’m sure I’ll add others later).

11. Root for OU in person at a bowl game (and have them win!).

12. Publish something…an article, a book, etc.

13. Visit the Holy Land.

Two Sweet Victories: Kansas 12-1, Huckabee 1-0

Last night was disappointing, but tonight was beautiful. What more could I ask for but solid victories both for Mike Huckabee and the Jayhawks?

They both get style points, by the way, for winning in a timely manner. Mike Huckabee’s victory was determined within the hour, and the Jayhawks wrapped the Hokies up before midnight. My tired football-weary eyes appreciate that!

Sorry for the poor picture quality. Apparently, my new camera is good, but it still needs time to recharge. I need to do a better job of knowing when the battery is low, or at least invest in a backup battery.

Maybe I Don’t Want to Move to Phoenix after All

***We interrupt this otherwise girly blog to discuss 300-pound men who throw each other to the ground.***

As sad as I SHOULD be that OU lost, I really am not. It’s much easier to get emotional about games (both when we’re playing well and when we are playing poorly) when there are other fans around. Sometimes I feel like I’m the only OU fan on the entire East Coast.
Another way I can avoid getting attached to the outcome of the game is by doing something during it. While we’re playing well, I’m watching attentively. While we’re playing poorly, I read or write thank you notes to distract myself between downs. I wrote 7 thank you notes and read 10 pages of fairly intense reading, if that tells you anything about the state of the game.
The funny thing is, I have to turn around and do this again tomorrow. Though I’d rather have seen OU win, I’ll still be rooting for KU to finish well. Just because the best can’t (yes, I still think OU is the best), doesn’t mean the second best (okay, that’s not really true, but they are my second favorite) shouldn’t. I just hope they can.
Then, I’ll giggle gleefully when we can be the first to stun KU next year come October. That’ll end all my family’s trash talking, or at least muffle it for a while.
***Now we end this special bulletin about lost games in favor of our regularly scheduled programming of lost luggage and lost brains.***

Take a Look at This

On cold days like these, I simply want to contemplate this picture. Warmth, sun, beach…aah.

Today’s my last day in Kansas, so of course I’m hitting up my favorite restaurant for some cheese fries. Hopefully I’ll be spending time with the ‘rents and doing some paper writing as well. If not, I know I’ll enjoy some football!

What’s ideal weather to you? I prefer it to be hot with low humidity, unless I’m at the beach which makes the humidity worth it. Summer is my favorite season, but oh do I love this time of year, too!

Why I Could Never Be an Actress

Okay, so my hopes are dashed thanks to Oklahoma’s loss yesterday. Do we get any credit for the fact that we lost because our quarterback was trying to make a tackle and got himself a concussion?

Moving on… (since I have a sneeking suspicion almost nobody reading this cares about football)

Tonight one of the 5th grade girls at Awana, “Jill,” was telling me about her minor injuries that she got during game time. I asked her if she should go to the emergency room and when she told me no, I asked if I needed to cry. She then asked if I could. I tried, but I only succeeded in getting a little misty-eyed.

I could never be an actress…that was hard work.
