Favorite Things: Give Me a “W”

Welcome to the Ignorant Historian! If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Alright, so Vicki had posted 20 of her favorite things (she got picked tWice) that start with the letter M and invited us to play along. She randomed (neW verb) me a “W.” Now I get to tell you 10 of my favorite things that start With the letter “W.” No problem. I mean, hey, they made a Whole movie recently about the letter right? Wait, the movie Wasn’t about a letter? Moving on…

1. Wichita. Hey, it’s my hometoWn and I’m rather fond of it. It’s nothing exciting for outsiders, but I still call it home. In a couple of Weeks I’ll be back there!

2. The World Wide Web. Sure, blogging is great, but so is catching up With friends and family.

3. Writing. I’ll be honest, blogging is my favorite form of Writing. When I get out of school, I hope to start groWing in other forms of Writing. Practice, practice, practice!

4. Winning. Let’s face it, I’m pretty competitive. This might not come across the blog. Then again, maybe it does. My favorite Wins are those by my Sooners. No W for us this Week as it Was a buy Week, but next Week…bring it on, Texas Tech!

5. Why? Not like a 3yo Would say, but like I Would say. I like to understand the reasoning behind Why others think and believe the Way they do. I also like to understand Why I think the Way I do. AlWays room to groW!

6. Welcoming friends into my home. I’m not much of a big group person, but I don’t mind it if I’m the hostest. I love to have friends over, but I don’t do it enough because I let my busy schedule and my task-orientation to get in the Way.

7. Watermelon and green apple Jolly Ranchers. WoW, I haven’t thought about that in a long time. I haven’t had a Jolly Rancher in ages, but those are my tWo favorite flavors!

8. The Way, the Truth, and the Life. In other Words, Jesus Christ. Clearly, this isn’t in any order, because my Savior deserves Way higher billing than 8th place!

9. Words. I love learning neW Words and using neW Words. I don’t really sit doWn and learn them, I just pick them up from my reading. Since I like to read classics, I get good exposure to some high-falutin’ Words. Okay, I just cracked myself up. I enjoy plays on Words, too.

10. Water. Hey, it’s necessary for life. Plus, our bodies contain like 74% Water or Whatever. When I hear that statistic I think of cuting myself open like a cactus to get out the juice. I haven’t tried it, but I don’t think it Works that Way.

You tired of all the Ws yet? Did I forget to capitalize any?

If you’d like to play along, just let me knoW and I’ll random you a letter, too. I’ve you’re “lucky” maybe random.org Will pick you an X! (If it does, I promise to give you an option of a more common letter.)

——————————————————————————

Would it be cheating if I just said that I Was thankful for everything on this list? I am, really. But specifically, I’d say that I’m thankful for my friends. They put up With so much!

What I’ve Done

Yes, I totally sang the Linkin Park song in my head when I wrote that title. Good song.

Have you ever been watching American Idol, SYTYCD, or one of the other ridiculous reality shows out there and thought, “I can do that!”? Or maybe you’d like YOUR chance to look like a fool on national television. Well, I just might be able to help you out.

No, I’ve not suddenly become a casting director for the lastest show, “What We’re Hoping You’ll Watch so We Can Get Rich Selling Advertising.” But I do have the hook-up with Liz’s Got Talent that’s coming to the little screen (13″ or 17″ or whatever you have on your desk/lap) near you.

If you don’t know Liz, she’s come up with a couple of hilarious videos herself, and now she’d like to see yours. Feel free to join us over there next Friday! If enough of you poke me, you just might see me post a video of my “talent.” I know you can’t wait.

Now that you’ve agreed to join me, I’m moving on…

Saw this on Jacki’s and Linda’s blogs and thought I’d play along. Btw, does anyone know if the grammar on that last sentence is correct? I mean, I know it’s missing a subject, but whatev. The question is should I have put the possessive on both “Jacki” and “Linda” or just “Linda?” Situations like this bug me because I don’t know the right answer.

I’m thankful for blogging. I love having an opportunity to write and to get feedback. I also enjoy reading what others have to say and responding to their writing.

Got the Picture

Cara tagged me for a fun photo meme. The rules:

  • Go to your sixth picture folder, then pick your sixth picture. (I only have 4 folders in my main picture folder, so I went to the 6th picture in the 4th folder.)
  • Pray that you remember the details.
  • Tag 5 others, leave a comment to let them know they’ve been tagged.

This picture is from high school junior year, April 2000. The picture was probably taken around 4 or 5 in the morning. After our school’s after-prom party (where I won a dorm refridgerator), we went to IHOP for breakfast. A sort of after-after-prom. On the left is “Chicago” and “Brooke” and on the right are three other good friends from way back when. Notice we’re all girls? We went as a big group of girls which was a lot of fun.

I haven’t tagged anyone in a meme in a while, but this one’s easy and fun. I’m going to tag:

Liz

Angela (I’m thinking she’ll have a pic of one of her dogs.)

Aubrey (Nobody better be wearing red!)

Rachel Ann

Lynette (she tagged me, so I thought she’d appreciate it!)

I hope you girls will play along, but if you don’t that’s okay, too.

I Must Be Really Weird

This is not the lame-o post I promised from back on Thursday. That post should be up tomorrow. Or the next day. It would be kinda funny to string you along for something that isn’t worth all the hype.

Okay, Okay. I get the point. You all think I’m weird. In a week’s time, I was tagged by three people for essentially the same meme, which is one I’ve done before. First Hi-D, then Irish Coffeehouse, then Heather. Well ladies, you’ve got your wish. Here’s an sequel presentation of 7 weird things about me!

First off:

The rules are:

1. Link your tagger and list these rules on your blog.
2. Share seven facts about yourself on your blog, some random, some weird.
3. Tag seven people at the end of your post by leaving their names as well as links to their blogs.
4. Let them know they have been tagged by leaving a comment on their blog.

Now, this is what is weird/random about me:

1. I don’t like things left half open: drawers, doors, conversations. All the way closed or all the way shut. My dad used to tease me about this when I was younger and would close my door just a smidge, so I’d have to get up and go and open it back fully.

2. I REALLY hate to be surprised/scared. I have been known to bite off someone’s head if they scared me (figuratively, just in case you thought I was really that weird).

3. I don’t like gum. Or mint. I can handle mint for brushing my teeth, but that’s about it. I used to like gum, but I had it a lot one summer we went to Colorado and never looked back since. I also have TMJ so it hurts to chew.

4. I also don’t like ketchup. This was actually a stubborn decision made by a 6yo Ronnica. My dad eats it on everything, which I thought was gross, so I decided to take the opposite approach and eat it on nothing. I don’t like tomatoes anyway, so it’s not that far of a stretch, but I really think I don’t like ketchup only because I decided not to like it and now I’m not used to the taste. The one exception? Meatloaf.

5. I do the last few things in my bedtime routine in the dark. I really like the dark. I check my alarm, put on lotion, put on my Lipsmaker (see #6), go to the bathroom, get a drink, and do anything else I forgot to do in the dark. It was much easier done in my old room, where I could always be touching something and know exactly where I am. But this room has a landmine (the ottoman) and a big open space between the dresser and the bed that I have to traverse. I’m getting better at it, though.

6. I’m so totally addicted to Lipsmaker lip gloss it isn’t even funny. I usually reapply every 20-3o minutes. More frequently if I’m drinking something. I tried to switch to a more grown-up chapstick, but it doesn’t feel the same. My favorite flavor is, of course, Dr. Pepper, but I like most of the other flavors, too. I have them everywhere (in my bag, in my work drawer, on my desk, on my reading table, in every purse, and in every jacket), but I usually have to replace at least one of those tubes a month. My guess is that I eat about 1 oz of Lipsmacker in a year (and each little tube is only .14 oz).

7. When I was in college I dabbled a lot in different subject areas. Pretty much the only major type of class I didn’t take was a business class. And what am I doing now? Work in financial counseling. It would have really been helpful to have taken one or two classes in the subject back then…

I usually try not to tag people on memes, and I’m going to have to abide by that policy on this one. This is just too popular of a meme and I know most of you have done it. If for some reason you haven’t, then consider this your tag!

Blog to Blog Project

Okay, so I saw this here, and thought I’d jump in. Basically, the idea is to visit 5 blogs on the blogrolls of 5 of my regular reads. In other words, a friend of a friend. Got it? Good. Let’s get started.

First, I stopped by the Dust Bunny Hostage and headed off to visit Kari, AKA Granny Skywalker. Hehe, fun name. She apparently has no problem embracing autumn! I think she could be a real inspiration to me as I try to get down to healthy weight, as she has lost 41 pounds! Way to go, Kari!

Next, I headed over to Tammy’s pink blog, through Iva’s blog, the Horizontal Yo-Yo. I found out that she’s a lefty and a Christian just like me! Woo hoo!

Then I followed Jennifer’s advice, from the Pettersons Go Public, to go to Shannon at Eight Crazy. Eight crazy what? I’m not sure. She’s in Nantucket right now. I’m not really sure I realized that was a real place (and hey, perhaps it’s not!).

Next, I traveled through Debra to visit Woulda Coulda Shoulda. She talked about how she got infuriated by watching the debate last week. Sounds about where most of us are! She’s also a writer. Now THAT’S a job I would do!

Lastly but not leastly, I visited Daughter of Hope through my long-time (in blog time) friend Jacki. Apparently she’s been in a bit of a bloggy duldrum until the bailout kicked her out. I really am not trying to bring politics into this post! Apparently it’s what’s on everyone’s mind…

So I’d love for you to visit these bloggers and let them know I sent ya!

The Affect of Blogging

Last weekend, Carrie at Reading to Know tagged me for a meme about blogging.

Here are the rules:
1. Write about 5 specific ways blogging has affected you, either positively or negatively.

2. link back to the person who tagged you
3. link back to this
parent post
4. tag a few friends or five, or none at all
5. post these rules— or just have fun breaking them

I’ll definitely be breaking them. It says I can in the rules, as long as I have fun doing it! I decided not to tag anyone. If you decide to put your two cents in (and I encourage you to do so), I’d love to read it. Either put it in the comment or share the link with me.

Alrighty. Blogging has affected me…

1. Positively. The daily practice of writing (and reading) has improved my writing skills. I’m a better writer today than when I started this blog.

2. Negatively. Blogging has decreased the time I spend journaling. But this has been a temporary affect, as I now write as much in my journal as I used to pre-blogging.

3. Positively. Blogging has helped me to think through why I believe what I believe and why I take the positions that I do. If I can’t articulate my position, then it is time to reevaluate. Either I come out realizing that I was right and now know why, or I realize that I wasn’t right and change my viewpoint. Is there a logical inconsistancy in my viewpoint? One of the readers is bound to point it out. There’s no place for sloppy thinking.

4. Negatively. Blogging can easily turn into simply trying to please my audience. As much as I love you guys, I don’t want to be a sellout.

5. Positively. Blogging has connected me with people like you. It’s not a one-sided thing. I love getting feedback on what I write, and I like commenting on what you write.

So, how about you?

I Am, I Want, I Have, I Wish I Could

Following a trend (AKA a meme), but I felt like it would be interesting. If not, sorry.

I AM … a daughter of the King.

I WANT… to get married and have children.

I HAVE … probably 4 times as many books now as when I came to seminary.

I WISH I COULD … go back and tell my teenaged self to get it together. There’s more important things in life than boys and academics.

I HATE … sin in my life. Or I wish I did more.

I FEAR … being single the rest of my life, but this is less and less of a big deal to me.

I HEAR … thunder. (Actually, I wrote “lightning” at first and realized that wasn’t quite right.)

I SEARCH … for the truth.

I DON’T THINK … John McCain has a real chance come November.

I REALLY … love my life, in spite of all the “I want” statements. I’m greatly blessed, and am learning to be content not in circumstances, but in Christ (Philippians 4).

I REGRET … several things I’ve said to people throughout the years.

I LOVE … my family more the more time we are apart.

I ACHE FOR … “the one.” Okay I don’t know if I believe in such nonsense, but I do desire a godly man to walk into my life in God’s timing.

I ALWAYS CRY … (wait, how am I supposed to finish this? it looks complete the way it is!) when someone else is crying.

I AM NOT … a procrastinator.

I DANCE … when no one’s looking.

I SING … to the radio at the top of my lungs when I’m driving home from work.

I NEVER … expect of others as much as I expect of myself.

I RARELY … go to bed early (I’d much rather sleep late!).

I CRY WHEN I WATCH … Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, AKA the crying movie. I haven’t even dared to see the second in the theater.

I AM NOT ALWAYS … obsessed with boys! Really!

I HATE THAT … I’ve mentioned my desire to marry so many times in this. It makes me feel vulnerable (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but it certainly isn’t a comfortable thing). I don’t want to be THAT girl who can’t live without a man.

I’M CONFUSED ABOUT … how to balance my desires and plans for the future.

I NEED … a hug now! Too many emotions!

I SHOULD … thank God more for His abudant blessings.

We Want Answers!

Thanks for playing along yesterday. As promised, here are the answers.

1. “The family of Dashwood had been long settled in Sussex.”
As many of you guess it, this is Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. I hadn’t read it until this fall, but I felt like it was as good (maybe even better?) than Pride and Prejudice.

2. “The suburb of Saffron Park lay on the sunset side of London, as red and ragged as a cloud of sunset.”
I didn’t think anyone would get this. I probably wouldn’t have either. It is G. K. Chesterton’s The Man Who Was Thursday. It’s a very clever book, and I can’t wait to read it again.

3. “Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the popholes.”
Another easy one: George Orwell’s Animal Farm. I also thought it was strange that the first three books I put contained locations in them.

4. “Seldon paused in surprise.”
Someone thought this was one of the English books (based on my hint that all but three were), but in fact this is from an American book. I suppose the name Seldon kinda throws you off. Anyway, it is Edith Wharton’s House of Mirth. To anyone familiar with the book, I almost included the second line as well, which contains Lily Bart’s name, which would have made it a whole lot easier.

5. “On an exceptionally hot evening early in July a young man came out of the garret in which he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, toward K. bridge.”
This is the other Russian book (the other was guessed, #8). If I had taken this quiz and not written it, this would have been one that I would have thought was familiar but couldn’t place, most likely. It’s from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s Crime and Punishment. Very intriguing book.

6. “Elfride Swancourt was a girl whose emotions lay very near the surface.”
Okay, I was quite impressed that Amanda was able to place this as a Thomas Hardy book. I hadn’t realized any other normal people have read as many of his books as I have (okay, I think I’ve only read 4). Regardless, this is from A Pair of Blue Eyes. This first sentence pretty much sums up the whole book.

7. “Among other public buildings in a certain town, which for many reasons it will be prudent to refrain from mentioning, and to which I will assign no fictitious name, there is one anciently common to most towns, great or small: to wit, a workhouse; and in this workhouse was born; on a day and date which I need not trouble myself to repeat, inasmuch as it can be of no possible consequence to the reader, in this stage of the business at all events; the item of mortality whose name is prefixed to the head of this chapter.”
Nobody’s read Oliver Twist? This was pretty much a giveaway, if you’ve read the book. This is classic Charles Dickens and oh so funny. There’s a reason I want to write like him. We turn it into a children’s story, but it is so not.

8. “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”
Yes, several people recognized this as being from Leo Tolstoy’s Anna Karenina. My favorite start to a book EVER. Once again, it pretty much sums up the book, but it also quite clever. Yes, the book is long, but I promise it doesn’t read like it. You should definitely give it a try. This book is where my love of 19th century Russian literature came from.

9. “I have just returned from a visit with my landlord–the solitary neighbor that I shall be troubled with.”
Seriously, no one got this? Most of you have read it! Or at least most people who went to high school were supposed to read it. It is Emily Bronte’s Wuthering Heights. I haven’t read this in a very long time (see my earlier comment about high school), but I really enjoyed it. I hope to read it again soon.

10. “Reader, it is impossible we should know what sort of person thou wilt be; for, perhaps, thou may’st be as learned in human nature as Shakespeare himself was, and, perhaps, thou may’st be no wiser than some of his editors.”
Okay, I would have been very surprised if anyone had gotten it. This is Henry Fielding’s Tom Jones. An absolutely hilarious novel. In each book (I think there are like 26), he starts with a chapter addressing the reader on some other topic related to the story (this first one outlines the style of the book), but not about the story of the book. It’s just great.

Famous First Lines?

Lynda posted a list of the first lines of her favorite 11 books. It looked like so much fun, I thought I’d do it too! To be honest, I didn’t quite pick my all-time favorite books, because I thought that might be too easy. But every title listed is way up there on my favorite book list, and every book is considered a classic. Do you recognize what any of these books are?

1. “The family of Dashwood had been long settled in Sussex.”

2. “The suburb of Saffron Park lay on the sunset side of London, as red and ragged as a cloud of sunset.”

3. “Mr. Jones, of the Manor Farm, had locked the hen-houses for the night, but was too drunk to remember to shut the popholes.”

4. “Seldon paused in surprise.”

5. “On an exceptionally hot evening early in July a young man came out of the garret in which he lodged in S. Place and walked slowly, as though in hesitation, toward K. bridge.”

6. “Elfride Swancourt was a girl whose emotions lay very near the surface.”

8. “Happy families are all alike; every unhappy family is unhappy in its own way.”

9. “I have just returned from a visit with my landlord–the solitary neighbor that I shall be troubled with.”

10. “Reader, it is impossible we should know what sort of person thou wilt be; for, perhaps, thou may’st be as learned in human nature as Shakespeare himself was, and, perhaps, thou may’st be no wiser than some of his editors.”

Enough with Me, How about You?

I know a good idea when I see one. And then I like to steal it. Yesterday I saw that Marie had posted a YouYou which is the opposite of meme. Get it? I found it rather clever and funny to read, so I thought that I could do the same for you. You.

Anyway, this is how it works:

Comment on this entry. Any comment will do. After you comment, I’ll answer/guess/makeup the answers to these questions:

1. What I’d say to you if we were to hangout in real-life.

2. What television/movie character you are most like.

3. Your favorite way to eat potatoes.

4. What your favorite ride/activity/food is at the fair.

It doesn’t matter if I know you, if you have never commented before this, nothing. If you do have a blog, make sure that I can find it so I can find out a little about you to make the answers more interesting. Sounds fun? Leave a comment!
