What Is in a Name?

What is in a name?

In America, we have generally agreed that a name is just a name, and its value is in the “prettiness” of it. Most of us do not even know what our name means. This is not the case in much of the world. Names tell about the character and family line of the individual. I have been fortunate to be given a unique name at birth, Ronnica. While I don’t like to share the rest of my name online, my middle name is also unique and my last name is less than ordinary. Because of this, I’ve had a fascination with names all my life. Like many other girls, I would make lists of the names that I would name my children. When it was time to make a storybook retelling stories from different cultures for a class in college, I decided that the theme would be names. This is that storybook.

The story begins…

I am almost nine months pregnant, so you can imagine some of things I am going through.  One physical problem or maybe even a mental one I have been having lately is very crazy, detailed dreams.  Of course, I also suffer from the usual backaches, bladder issues, and weird cravings.  My husband has even been complaining that I have been extra moody lately.  These things place some strain on our relationship, particularly as we have so much to plan and do in the hopes of our new child, which is our first.  One heated discussion we have been having of late is what to name our child.  We have decided not to know the sex of the baby, which just makes everything that more difficult.  My husband, Bill, is always talking about how he cannot wait to introduce William Reynolds Stevens III to the sports he loves.  I really abhor the idea of naming a child a third.  I want something fun, something with meaning.  I don’t want my child to face what I did by being the third Amy in her third grade class.  My child is special; he or she deserves a special name.  This is why I have been asking so many people about unusual names, which always comes up with some interesting suggestions.  Some of these include Rumpelstiltskin and Tikki Tikki Tembo.

But really what are bothering are my dreams.  Just last night I woke up in a fright from the series of dreams I had…

Come back Monday for the next installment.
