Titles Don’t Come Easy at This Hour

I’m back.  After time in Chicago, IL, Wichita, KS, and Denison, TX, I’m back in good ole Raleigh, NC.  I love to travel, but really enjoy coming home, too.  Now if everything would just unpack itself…

The return trip was rather uneventful.  Neither of my flights were particularly full.  In fact, I had no one sitting next to me either way.  I have a knack for sitting next to no one, even on a almost-full flight, but it has been a while since I’ve been on a flight that was less than full.  As I was waiting to leave Wichita, I realized that it was incredibly quiet in the terminal, even though there were other people around.  Even the gate agents were whispering to each other.  It was so much different in Chicago!

I could go into the details about everything that I did over the last 10 days, but I don’t want to bore you.  My time at my parents’ primarily consisted of putting together puzzles, sleeping, eating, and watching movies.  My time in Texas consisted of playing with a little girl and getting some good time talking with Dana.  I sure do miss living with her, even though we haven’t in over 3 years.  We would regularly stay up until 2 in the morning talking in our beds.  As much as I did enjoy that time, I don’t think I would ever want to go back to a dorm setting.  I enjoy the quiet of my own bedroom with only one other person in the apartment!

If I continued this post, it would just get rambly.  Actually, it’s already gotten rambly, so I’m going to end it here.  Don’t forget to enter the $50 Target gift card giveaway if you haven’t done so already!

Where I’ll Live When I Grow Up

Oh, so Britni has this post up about the top 24 places she’s supposed to enjoy living. I filled out the survey too, and here’s what it came up with. To be fair, I didn’t specify a region, because I like the midwest, have always wanted to live on the West Coast, and currently live in the East. I’ve included my commentary, but I’d love your input, especially if you live in any one of these areas! (No, I’m not planning on moving. Except my move into Raleigh in a couple of weeks. I love where I live now and don’t plan on seeking a change just yet).

1. Brownsville, Texas
I think I could live in Texas…if it wasn’t for all the Texans.

2. McAllen, Texas

3. West Palm Beach, Florida
Now your talking…the best beach I ever went to was there.

4. Phoenix, Arizona
It’s not just in my imagination! I’ve wanted to live in Phoenix ever since I spent the summer of 2003 there.

5. Tucson, Arizona

6. Tampa, Florida

7. Houston, Texas
At least I have friends that live there.

8. Corpus Christi, Texas

9. Orlando, Florida
Then I could come into contact with lots of my worst fears.

10. Charleston, South Carolina

11. Dothan, Alabama
The “Peanut Capital of the World”…as long as I don’t have to eat boiled peanuts to live there.

12. Augusta, Georgia
Just give me free tickets to the Masters, and I’ll move there.

13. Galveston, Texas

14. Clearwater, Florida
Another place with a great beach…aah.

15. Miami Beach, Florida
Repeat the beach comment.

16. Scottsdale, Arizona

17. El Paso, Texas
I do think that I would prefer to live in South Texas if I was living in Texas. But I’ve never been further South than Waco.

18. St. George, Utah

19. Miami, Florida

20. Bradenton, Florida

21. Austin, Texas
Over my dead body.

22. San Antonio, Texas

23. Savannah, Georgia

24. Lake Havasu, Arizona

Interesting list. If I was making it for myself, at least one midwest city would have made the list. Instead, it looks like I should live in Florida, Texas, or Arizona. I’d prefer the latter. Yes, I said something about preferring the heat, thus all the hot cities. You got a problem with that?

If you decide to take the quiz, let me know your results!

What Can YOU Do with 5 Hours in a Mall?

Saturday Dana and I spent over 5 hours at her local mall that has seen better days while I was visiting her in Texas. What can you do in 5 hours in a small rundown mall? This is what we did!

1. Shopped for clothes. This is pretty obvious, but surprisingly took very little of the 5 hours. The one place I could shop (because I have a giftcard) I didn’t want to buy anything since I knew I had a 30% off card at home. I only remember going in two other clothing stores.

2. Avoiding looking at UT stuff straight in the eye. OU stuff definitely dominated, but since we were in Texas, UT was still too abundant for my taste. I literally shielded my eyes as I walked into one store until I got past the offensive burnt orange.

3. Shopped at a store that had all their house decorating items for 70% off the lowest price. I bought a framed pretty lilac picture of some flower I don’t know the name of for $4.50. Unfortunately, they wouldn’t take my card for that little of an amount, so Dana had to buy it for me. I did pay her back, really.

4. Considered redecorating my apartment and redoing my wardrobe in a western theme. It would have been easy to get everything I need there for both the apartment and me as it was everywhere.

5. Look at the chess board in a smoke shop that was originally spotted by one of Dana’s friends as beautiful. The pieces had skulls for faces, something he apparently overlooked.

6. Get beat in air hockey. Dana and I both are competitive, so we love to play anything of the sort. After getting off to a great start, Dana beat me twice as she scored 11 unanswered points (I’m pathetic, I know).

7. Beat Dana miserably three times in lunar golf (minature golf in black lighting). This was necessary after my previous air hockey losses. Overall, I had a winning record for the weekend.

8. Get irritated at the fact that various children would not wait until we were done at a hole before they got started on the same one. Where were their parents?

9. Eat freshly made corn dogs while sipping Diet Dr. Pepper. Yum yum!

10. Not pay for said corn dogs since they only accept cash. Oops. (Actually, Dana rushed off to the ATM and got back before our corn dogs were even done.)

11. Shop at a Hallmark whose prices were about 50% less than any other Hallmark I’ve ever been in. I seriously considered buying a Christmas ornament for next year, but I didn’t find one that fit my fancy.

12. Look at jewelry that is much too costly for our current budgets.

13. See people I know. Seriously. I’m over a 1000 miles away from where I live, and at least 300 miles from where I grew up, but I see someone I know. It was Dana’s boss that I met a few trips ago, but it was still someone I know.

Fish Out of Water

I’m not a small town girl. I’m not a city girl either, but I grew up in a modest-sized city, and that’s what I’m used to. Neither am I from Texas (or the “Tale of a Kansas Girl” title would be a bit awkward). Going to school at OU only increased my dislike of the we’re-better-than-y’all Texas attitude.

These are just a couple of the reasons why visiting Dana in Texas makes me feel like a fish out of water. Small-town Texas is just different. I’m not saying that it’s better or worse, just different.

The difference between small-town Texas and middle-sized middle-America can be illustrated by the Mexican restaurant we went to on Saturday. I LOVE Mexican and have been disappointed with every restaurant I’ve been to around here. One thing Texans have going for them is they know how to make delicious Mexican food.

So Saturday Dana and I went to a Mexican restaurant called La Mesa. The food was great, but the interior of the restaurant looked more like a steakhouse than a Mexican restaurant. A whole wall was lined with buck heads, while another wall was lined with trophy bass (are those actually real fish or mock-ups? we’re not a hunting/fishing family so I don’t know). I can’t eat an animal while looking at a dead animal (just one of my many idiosyncrasies), so Dana graciously allowed me to face the fish rather than the deer as that wasn’t so bad.

Not only was I able to eat good Mexican while in Texas, I was able to eat good BBQ. I love BBQ, but really never ate it much while I was growing up. However, it was always there. So, when I’m stuck with Carolina BBQ (pork in vinegar – yuck!) I really crave beef brisket in a sweet BBQ sauce. The place where we ate BBQ was a hole-in-the-wall called Cackle and Oink. Not only was the BBQ delicious, but the staff was very attentive!

So, I enjoy Texas food, but I would prefer it without Texas attitude!

Refreshing Weekend

Whew, I’m tired. I had a great, restful trip, but getting up at 3:30 this morning to leave for the airport is starting to weigh on me. I’ll be writing more about what went on (I took good notes) to give you an insightful account, but I’ll wait until I’m my usual 90% sane (I’m at about 32% right now) so that I can wow you with my witty insight. Or not.

I hope that you enjoyed the posts by my roommates April (the Longfellow quoting girl) and Dori (the North Carolina girl) the last two days. You should leave them a comment so that they’ll feel loved (and maybe even consider getting a blog of their own!). I love that my roommates were willing to venture out into the blogosphere on my behalf and didn’t post what they had threatened. That said, I should probably only say nice things about them (which is easy), since they now know how to post on my blog!

Here’s an overview of what happened (based on the list of what I said would happen):

1. We ate Mexican food (and BBQ!).

2. I drank 2 vanilla Diet Dr. Peppers from Sonic. Heaven in a straw.

3. We laughed a lot. At ourselves and others.

4. Dana did several things that made me think that she’s crazy. I’m sure she came to that same realization about me, too. That’s just part of why I love her.

5. Actually, except for last night we got a good amount of sleep. I slept 10 HOURS on Friday night in a comfy bed. Simply wonderful.

6. We did have some good discussions.

7. Characters were met. I felt like I was right at home meeting her friends, since I had heard so much about them. Makes me wonder what they had heard about me before I came…

8. Our friendship was renewed.

It was just the perfect break weekend that helped energize me for the weeks of studying ahead. Thanks, Dana!

Things That Are Bound to Happen This Weekend

As I post this, I’m traveling to Texas to visit my college roommate, Dana. When Dana and I get together, there are several things that are bound to happen. It’s just who we are. Here are a few:

1. Mexican food will get eaten. I’m not even sure I have the grammar right on that sentence, but you know that I have to have Tex-Mex while I’m there. The Mexican around here leaves something to be desired. As does the BBQ, but I don’t know if we’ll be going for that or not.

2. Dr. Pepper (and diet) will be drank. It’s a passion of ours. I plan on stopping by Sonic and getting a refreshing vanilla Diet Dr. Pepper. Ah.

3. We will laugh. A lot. This should go without saying.

4. Dana will do something that will make me realize that she’s crazier than I thought. I’m bound to do something as well that’ll betray my low level of sanity; I just don’t plan on bragging about that. Last year I (almost) walked into the door at Walmart because I wasn’t following the “Do Not Enter” sign.

5. Sleep will be scarce. We used to stay up until 2AM talking. I don’t know if we’ll stay up as late now, but there’s a good chance of it.

6. Serious discussions about faith and life will be had. That’s what I love most about Dana: her pursuit of truth in every aspect of her life is so convicting. While we do have a ton of fun together, we also talk through all the things that are going on in our lives.

7. Characters will be meet. I don’t know if it’s fair to call people that I haven’t met yet characters, but I’ll be a character they are meeting, so I guess we’re even. The only person who is (apparently) not a character is Dana herself.

8. A friendship will be continued and the friends renewed!

I’m heading out to Texas for the weekend and won’t be posting again until Monday. I’ve arranged for my roommates, the lovely April and Dori to fill in for me. I gave them very few restrictions, so I have NO IDEA what they’ll post. I’m sure it will be a good laugh by all!

Denison and Dana

This post has been long enough delayed! It seems like I let school get in the way of the important things in life: blogging, watching movies, and sleeping in. A few weeks ago, I was able to visit Dana in Texas. It was a great weekend to spend with her and to see where she lives.

When I arrived on Friday, we immediately embarked on the 1 hour+ trip to Sherman. On our way, we saw not one, not two, not three, but four Kohl’s. I don’t know why one road needs so many Kohl’s. It’s almost as bad the four Targets I pass on my way to work each day. After eating free, good chicken-fried steak (yum…beef, breading, and gravy!), we stopped by Walmart to pick up a few ingredients we were lacking for our weekend meals. I couldn’t figure out how to get in! Yes, I’ve worked at Walmart for 3 years and continue to patron it regularly, but somehow I didn’t believe that the door marked “exit” is actually not an entrance. In my defense, that’s the only Walmart I’ve ever been to that’s doors worked only one way.

(Sidenote: For all you Norman-ites, you should check out the grocery entrance at the westside Walmart. The door marked exit has “do not enter” signs on the doors as you leave, or at least it did when I worked there!)

A more disgusting part of our Walmart trip was that Dana saw a woman drag an entire cart into the bathroom stall with her. That cart was probably carrying someone’s groceries only an hour later! Gross!

Saturday, Dana took me to the house that she is working on fixing up. It’s in a small town outside of Durant that I have already forgot the name of. It was neat to see what has already been done and what still yet needs to be done. You can see Dana on her porch in the picture above. Look at those new windows and doors!

This next picture is probably the best picture. There was an outhouse behind her house! No word on when renovations will start on it.

No trip is complete without a funny picture of Dana. When she bent down to smell this daffodil, I had to capture the Kodak moment!

After we finished the grand tour, Dana took me by her grandfather’s grave. I know that he meant a lot to her, so it meant a lot to me to see his grave.

The next stop was our longest. We went to Dana’s mom’s house in order to prepare for a garage sale. We didn’t do a lot of that, but Dana did let me help her clean out part of her room. The best part was probably getting to organize her books (I love that she lets me organize her sometimes!) and getting to hear her read her freshman year diary. Getting to know the freshman Dana was neat, because the heart for God was there along with, of course, some juvenile sentiments.

Look at the cute babies we got to hang out with! Amy (with Dana) was very shy around me at first, but later she would play peekaboo and wanted me to let her outside to play. Heavenly (with me) was the sweetest, most content baby I’ve come in contact with. Makes me want one of my own!

Saturday wasn’t complete without a visit to Sonic. I had to have a Vanilla Diet Dr Pepper done right! It was so delicious!

Sunday was good too. I got to go to church with Dana as well as to her small group. She has a great small group, full of people of all ages who are seeking after God. During the discussion afterwards, I was sincerely asked to come back and teach a class at VBS! I think that would be an interesting career, going around helping with VBS. Sadly, I don’t think I could really make a living off of it, though.

Late Sunday was spent with Christina in Dallas playing games. Christina is too good, beating me at Othello, Beat the Landlord, and Ultimate Uno. We all laughed a lot though, making it worth only getting 3 1/2 hours of sleep before I headed back to Raleigh for work the next day.
