Things I’ve Seen Today

1.  Something comical: Someone wearing stripper shoes at a career fair.  I’m pretty sure there wasn’t anyone there hiring for that career…

2.  Something strange: Lots of tattoos and some awkward-looking piercings, once again, at the career fair.  I’m not necessarily against these things, but it’s generally the rule that you got to cover ‘em up when applying for jobs.  This has got to be doubly important in this highly-competitive job market.

3.  Something so-not-me: An unopened Amazon box…how dare he not want to open it and see the book inside and smell that new-book smell?  Does it really matter that it’s for school?

and

4.  Something sobering: a sheet-covered pedestrian killed in a hit-and-run accident during rush hour traffic.

Anti-Snow Indeed

I should have known better than to believe the weather reports that we were actually going to get accumulated snow here in Raleigh.  I guess our last snow, the only substantial snow in all of my 4 winters here, threw me off.

We did get a dusting of snow last night, but nothing this morning like we were expected to.  Though the roads are perfectly clear, the schools are on on a 2-hour delay, which made the commute easier.  I’m glad that we didn’t get snow so that today can go off as planned, with all my appointments!

The Anti-Snow Day

A couple of weeks ago, the Triangle (the cool name for Raleigh, Durham, and Chapel Hill) got blasted with snow, and I was able to stay home from work.  Of course, this was when the tax season was still a wee baby, so it wasn’t hard to hold back the people wanting you to file their taxes now to get their refund back ASAP, because most people didn’t even have all their documents anyway.

Tonight we’re expected to get another coat of snow (what’s the deal? there’s a reason to live in NC, and it’s not because of snowfall), and I had thought that I could make tomorrow another snow day.  That was when I thought that tomorrow was Thursday, a non-tax day.  I was probably thrown off by the fact that I spent today doing taxes, which is also a non-tax day.

So this snow day will never come to fruition, even if we get the snow predicted (and the crazy drivers to go along with it).  I have 7 tax appointments set up tomorrow that I have to keep.  Sure, some of them will cancel, but most of them probably won’t.   Regardless, I have to be there just in case.

So tomorrow, I’ll have to be one of the crazies.  It’s been a few years since I’ve driven on snow or ice, but hopefully I’ll manage!

Dear Fellow Driver

Dear Fellow Driver,

I first noticed your car as I was driving to work because of the faded Mike Huckabee bumper sticker in your window. Kindness welled up in my heart as I remembered the common cause that we strove for.

When I had to get over because of temporary construction in my lane, I waited (not so) patiently for someone to let me in. I was frustrated as it was clearly not my fault that there was a construction vehicle blocking my lane and no other car was going to let me (or any of the 50 cars behind me) get over in front of them. But you did. That’s when I noticed that you had a license plate on the front of your car with our church’s logo on it.

I realized at that moment that we had more in common than a favorite political candidate. We sat in the same pews (or chairs, as our church has), listened to the same teaching, and heard the encouragement of our pastors to love our neighborhood.

That’s exactly what you were doing. You didn’t know that I was a member of the same church, let alone a Christian. You were neighborly because that’s what we’re called to do, and how we can be witnesses to those around us.

Thank you for your kindness to me and more importantly for being a good witness of our church and, above all, Christ. So many times Christians (and I’m definitely including myself in on this one!) seek after our own good above the interests of others. We know better, but we do it anyway. We get caught up in the go, go, go and the the materialism of our culture and forget that we have a higher calling (Philippians 3:20).

If I happen to see you at church, I probably won’t tell you this because I’m a wimp about talking to strangers. But know that I thank you, fellow driver, for this timely reminder and allowing the light of Jesus Christ to shine through you in this dark world.

Gratefully,

Ronnica
